About this listen

Audiobook narrated by Gary Thomas.

Don't let toxic people undermine your God-given calling. . . learn when to walk away.

Have you ever counted how many times Jesus walked away from toxic people or let them walk away from him? The answer may surprise you.

Drawing from years serving as a pastor, Gary Thomas, bestselling author of Sacred Marriage, looks at biblical examples from the lives of Jesus, Paul, and Nehemiah to equip you to handle toxic people with grace and firmness.

We often feel the guilt and responsibility of meeting the needs of unhealthy people in our lives—whether a sibling, parent, spouse, coworker, or friend. And most of us struggle to recognize when a relationship has become toxic and how to move beyond it.

In When To Walk Away, you'll discover how to:

  • Learn the difference between difficult people and toxic people.
  • Find refuge in God when you feel under attack.
  • Discern when and how to walk away from a toxic situation.
  • Keep a tender heart even in unhealthy relationships.
  • Grow your inner strength and invest in reliable people.

Toxic relationships leave us drained, and we all experience them. If you're wondering what to do next, Gary Thomas has written this practical and helpful book for you. —Jennie Allen, author of Get Out of Your Head, founder of IF:Gathering

I have not come across a book that dealt with this issue before. Helping me to see that Jesus did indeed share in all of my humanity. Scripture shows me a better way.

Hugely helpful

I really loved how this book looked at the subject of dealing with difficult and toxic people through the lens and example of how Jesus did this topic is very rarely spoken about or taught on leaving those of us in relationships with toxic people sometime struggling to know how are Christ follower should act forgiveness is often emphasised without reference to repentance and trust and it’s just really helpful to see how Jesus deals with these things
I liked how he has broken up into different chapters dealing with the different aspects of these issues
My only fault if you would call it fault perhaps was with the delivery of the audible by the author he speaks with such passion in the book it can feel a little intense at times but the content is well worth it!! I found his practical examples really helpful in explaining exactly what he was meaning and was really refreshing to hear someone point out when the church gets it right and also when they get it wrong very balanced and well presented book dealing with a rarely talked about but very relevant subject

So helpful!

Useful for dealing with toxic people. It is also Biblical. I liked that. You get the practical for real life.

I love Gary Thomas clear writing style. the way he explains what he is and isnt saying. it helped alot with reviewing past decisions. He displays both wisdom and sound biblical backup. this is a tricky subject as labelling other people as toxic is serious.

really important book for church leaders

I thought this was a really good book. Lots of great points to ponder and has been really helpful in my current journey. I was disappointed that he focused a lot on extreme examples of toxic people. Identifying people that toxic is far easier than identifying those more passive aggressive and subtly manipulative and controlling. In many ways, their toxic behaviour is almost more dangerous as it's much more insidious and easy to be trapped by without realising. The little snippets that are woven into the book provide really useful insight, and I'd love to see a follow up book unpacking the more subtle side and the dangers. There are also some things I disagree with - I don't think it's fair to suggest you lay down a boundary with zero explanation and then call out gossip when the person is confused and thus speaks to others. Whilst you don't owe people a full explanation and I agree it is futile to open dialogue, I do think context is only fair. This is still worth a read or listen though!

Really thought provoking
