About this listen
Growing up, Jude McCallister was the bane of my existence.
My best friend. Fiercest ally. The most annoying boy in the world. At 18, the boy I loved to hate became the man I couldn’t live without. We were young. Madly in love. Invincible. Strong enough to weather any storm. Cocky enough to believe that no amount of time or distance could destroy us.
When Jude finally returned home from overseas, it should have been cause for celebration. But the man I’d fallen in love with was gone, and in his place was someone I no longer recognized.
I can't do this, the note said. I'm sorry.
Now, after six long years, he’s back. Only my heart...it doesn’t beat just for him anymore.

Part Two was the hardest to read. Jude’s return from war and his mental health struggles were heavy and painfully honest. I took breaks because it was a lot, but it never felt over the top, just raw and real.
By Part Three, the story leans into healing, forgiveness, and the slow rebuilding of trust. I didn’t find Jude unlikable or Lila too forgiving, they both made mistakes and had their own growth to do. That’s what made their ending feel earned.
I wouldn't classify this as a dark romance, but definitely touches on heavy themes like trauma, grief, and mental health, with a strong undercurrent of hope.
Narrators did a great job with this dual style narration.
