About this listen

The gripping standalone thriller from the Richard & Judy bestselling author, the master of suspense who brought us The Secrets She Keeps

'Why won't he let you go?' I ask.

'He thinks he owns me.'

To Philomena McCarthy, being a police officer means never turning your back on someone in trouble. So when a decorated detective beats his girlfriend and the case is covered up, Phil secretly helps her.

But as Phil lets her new friend deeper into her life, sinister things start happening.

And by the time she's truly afraid, it's already too late . . .

The story is good. I found the main protagonist extremely frustrating. I’m not sure if this is the authors view on a woman’s mentality or just this character. At one stage I was screaming at the speaker for the main protagonist to stop being such an idiot. I was pleased when book was over, it ended rather suddenly, however it had been dragged out so a relief. I’m not sure if I would recommend it. I definitely wouldn’t re read it. The description of places in London were great and reminded me of places I knew. The description of the Met police highlighted what a lot of people know. Good and bad apples everywhere.

Frustrating read

I thoroughly enjoyed this book and the integration of actual events was a breath of fresh air. Although, how the main character managed to make so many blunders was beyond me, but served to retain my interest and curiosity throughout .
An excellent book narrated very well.

This is the 1st audio book I've listened to by this author, and now im a fan. Great storyline and the twist at the end was a big surprise. Narrated to perfection.

Brilliant

Overall excellent. However I did have moments where I wanted to scream. How stupid can someone be who is a copper and has seen this type of behaviour and still falls for it? I’m not sure I liked Philomena. And I loathed Tempe despite any attempts to make her slightly more palatable. There was a moment I didn’t understand how Philomena could continue to pretend..
Robotham is excellent, despite this niggle on my part. Excellent convoluted plot with lots of turns and twists.

Excellent resolution and ending!

I enjoyed the complex family relationships and characters. A lot happened in the book but it didn't feel overly complicated or far fetched. Would recommend.
