Vanessa Ramirez, a 28-year-old employee at a beauty salon, wants to leave Mexico for greener pastures in the United States with her children, 10-year-old Lucía and 5-year-old Joaquín. With cartel violence spilling closer and closer to her doorstep every day, she seeks the help of the local coyotes—people smugglers—but is unable to afford the rising fees for their services. So, she reluctantly turns to Mexico’s criminal underworld to fund her escape and finds herself intertwined with the cartels she was so desperate to avoid.
A world of lust, greed, barbaric violence, and heartbreaking tragedy awaits her. Tragedy that will send her down the path to becoming a terrifying legend...
Jon Athan, the author of The Girl in the Attic and Am I Beautiful?, brings you a non-supernatural reimagining of the classic La Llorona urban legend in this brutal epic of extreme horror.

©2022 Jonathan Sixtos (P)2025 Jonathan SixtosAnother brilliant & culturally respectful take on another urban legend, ("Am I beautiful" sent shivers down my spine & was beautifully & hauntingly narrated)
this is a story of a mother's fierce love, willpower & determination, her trust, loyalty, betrayal, and heartbreak, leading to bloody revenge.
A heartbreaking & terrifying tale surrounding the Mexican Cartels made even more so as, although it is a work of fiction, the sad truth is that it is actually very factual & the scariest thing as with many of JA's books is that these things really happen & are happening right now.
However I very almost dnf by the end of just the third chapter purely due to the dreadful quality of the audio recording (it sounds like it was recorded in a toilet!) & I REALLY hate to criticise any narrators but omg she was monotonous, emotionless & "bored" sounding. there was no character distinction, no tension, no excitement, the gritty gory parts were read like someone falling asleep reading a shopping list. The only remotely listenable parts were the Spanish (I did manage to pick up & learn a few phrases which I suppose is a bonus?!)
I DID persevere & I completed the book but usually I would have taken a day at most. This took me three! (including listening at night to fall asleep to!)
if it were not for the excellent writing, & knowing what a great story teller Jon Athan was i certainly would not have carried on!
If this had been the first book that I had listened to by JA I would not have had the pleasure of enjoying his other audiobooks because it would have put me off any other work!
Jon Athan is a superb author & there has not been a single book that I have not loved, however, why on earth do most of the audio books have such terrible narration?
ok so I like Matthew Berry, and Beau Thomas is just fantastic.
Ive had to get used to the "ai sounding" HRW3 as he reads the majority of Jon's books, but this??? NO!
It's bad enough that only a fraction of JA's catalogue is available as an audiobook and just so sad that that these fantastic stories get ruined purely because of who is reading them!
If you can get past the narrator please do as it is so very worth it... oh & @JonAthan ... I would be more than honoured to bring your stories to life with the enthusiasm, thrill, suspense & "ewwww" factor that they deserve x
fantastic story as ever, but, sorry... narration definitely not so much.

Good Story

The storyline started ok, but lost its way after a couple of hours. No real like or dislike for any of the characters, the torture and violence described was over the top and didn't improve the story. This was free, but I still wouldn't recommend it to anyone.
Started okay, but became tedious
