"Three dead coppers, Tom, maybe four by lunchtime."

The targeted murder of four officers is only the first in a series of attacks that leaves police scared, angry and, most disturbingly of all, vengeful.

As Tom Thorne and Nicola Tanner dig into the reasons for the violence, a deeper darkness begins to emerge: the possibility that these murders are payback. The price paid for an unspeakable betrayal.

To uncover the truth, Thorne will be forced to question everything he stands for. He can trust nobody, and the shocking secrets revealed by one terrible night will fracture his entire world.

Wow, what can I say? I was slightly worried that this wouldn't be as good as the rest of the Tom Thorne books because it has been so long since the last one, well, I needn't have worried at all, Mark Billingham has outdone himself this time! This is perhaps the best one to date, it has everything we've come to expect from Tom Thorne - dark humour, great characters, disturbing crimes, intricate plotting, a healthy dose of police corruption and a twist that I did not see coming at all!

Also, unlike another reviewer, I really enjoy Mark's narration and have repurchased some of the audiobooks that had a different narrator so that they are all now read by him.

I hope we don't have to wait so long for the next one - pretty please Mark!

Like another reviewer said - I'm off to lie down in a darkened room now too!

The Best Yet!

On the whole I enjoyed the book until the end.

Found the swerve unbelievable and far fetched.

Marks narration is very good just difficult to distinguish between characters when the voice is so similar for all.

This was fantastic and I was hooked from the first chapter. It takes you on quite the ride and there are so many twists that you aren’t sure what’s gonna happen and when it’s happens it’s just brilliant. It was quite sad this time and I really felt for Tom and Co. I can’t wait for the next instalment as I’ve loved the entire series!! Brilliantly narrated by Mr Billingham as usual!! Five well deserved stars⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️

Brilliant.

Another great Mark Billingham book. May he never put his pen down! Could a professional actor narrate next time though please? The reading was monotone and it wasn’t easy to differentiate between characters, as it is when read by a professional….

Great book but could an actor narrate next time?

After a good while Tom Thorne is back, I have loved listening to this story and felt so at home after listening and reading to all the other books in this series, a complex storyline and great characters is what I love about Mark Billingham’s novels, can’t wait for the next one
