Summary

Part lawman, part tracker and part magician, the Wardens are monster-hunters - tasked with protecting the people from the various, nightmarish creatures that have invaded the world of men. However, despite being descended from a long line of Wardens, 16-year-old Errol Magnus believes it to be the absolute worst job on the planet: How could a single occupation simultaneously be the most boring, abominably stupid, and extraordinarily dangerous profession imaginable?

But when his older brother Tom - the current Warden for their region - goes missing, Errol has no choice but to enter the Badlands, where monsters abide in mind-boggling numbers, to find him. During his search, Errol crosses paths with - and finds himself stalked by - the legendary Wendigo, a monster with preternatural strength and speed, as well as enhanced senses of sight, smell and hearing...and an insatiable hunger for human flesh.

Now Errol must do the impossible and not only escape from the monster (something no one has ever done before), but also avoid the unearthly legacy it leaves on all its victims - a terrifying curse known as Wendigo Fever.

Really enjoyed this, will listen the rest of series

I received this title for free in exchange for an unbiased review. Narration 8/10 The narration is pretty good and gets you excited when it needs to but the speed is a bit on slow side. I sped it up to x1.3 sicne the very beginning and I found it perfect after that. Story 8.5/10 The story follows a young warden, aka monster hunter of this universe, who is forced to take action after the current warden of the area goes missing, thus being led into an encounter with the "Wendigo" monster that he'll have to defeat. I actually enjoyed the story, it was fun and fast paced, listened to it in a single go and didn't get bored at any point. It's a simple story so that you can relax, listen to, and easily follow. Overall I found this Audiobook pretty good, I enjoyed it and at some point I will listen to the rest of the series. Could be a bit longer (it's just 3h long). Would suggest for both adults and YL when you want a short enjoyable and easy to follow fantasy action story.

Entertaining and Energetic.

I received a free review copy of this book and am voluntarily leaving a review. An entertaining an energetic short listen. The narrator really brought the characters to life in this short story. I thought the story was well written and was action packed in such a short audiobook. It was clear that Errol did not want to follow in the family business and become a Warden but as soon as became apparent that his brother Tom has gone missing, he headed out to find him along with Gale. Errol's quick thinking saved his and Gale's life out in the Badlands along with his knowledge and training, all thanks to his brother Tom. He still has not found Tom, but Errol will not give up looking as he believes Tom would not give up on him.

Errol doesn't want to inherit the family business

Errol really doesn't want to inherit the family business. Since his father died and his brother took on the position of Warden for the area, Errol has been conscripted as deputy and is being trained, whether he likes it or not. A Warden's job is dangerous, fighting back the hoards of supernatural creatures that keep attacking. When his brother goes missing, Errol has no choice but to enter the Badlands to search for him. There he crosses paths with the legendary Wendigo and will need everything he's ever learned in order to survive. Quite a short book but a good introduction into this series. I'm intrigued to read about the other magical creatures Errol will encounter in future.

Coming of age with monsters

This book is a fun read. A young man who works with his brother as a Warden to control supernatural beings but dreams of moving to the city. He is thrust into a new reality when his brother vanishes and he is required to track a monster to protect his neighbors and himself. This is a first person telling. The story is interesting and at times amusing. The young man must develop determination and understanding to survive. The narrator did a very good job with this material. This book was provided free of charge and this review was freely and willingly done.

Reluctant Supernatural Sheriff

I have previously listened to and enjoyed other books from this author from his superhero series, so was interested to see how this more supernatural series would turn out and on the whole I found this one to be an equally enjoyable listen as those, the main downside is probably that the fairly short length means that we probably don't get as much detail as we might like from a first book in a new series. The wardens are supernatural protectors, defending the people in a region from the threat of strange and dangerous creatures, it is a job that the main protagonist, Errol, finds both boring and dangerous at the same time. He is forced to take on the role when his older brother goes missing and despite his reluctance, he grows into the role as the book progresses. The narrator gave a good performance overall with a suitably dramatic delivery and sufficiently distinctive tones for the various characters to nicely enhance the book. Overall, this was an enjoyable listen, but I'd have liked to have had a bit more world-building in there with it being book one of a series. [Note - I was given this free review copy audiobook at my request and have voluntarily left this review.]

Bob @ Platypire Reviews

*I received a copy of this audiobook for an honest review*

This was fun to listen to. The characters were pretty well laid out and understandable, and I felt for them. The flow was good and made for an enjoyable experience. When the action really got going, after the cabin (I'll not say more, spoilers!), I found myself tensing up pausing in whatever chore I was doing at the time to listen more closely.

I loved the different creatures that made appearances, and hope for more!

The only thing that really pulled me out of the tale was the overuse of "moreover". It just seemed to be in there a LOT, but then again, it could have just been me! This will only bother you if you're weird like me, though, hahaha.

I think anyone who enjoys magic and adventure would really like this.

A new fantasy adventure series by a great author

Kevin hardmans kid sensation series ranks as one of my favorites also narrated by mikael naramore. The combination of this dynamic duo deliver a one two Punch of great novel and narration. The well written stories are brought to life by a talented voice artist that will pull you even deeper into the story and the lives of the charismatic characters that were created in this ever expanding world. Welcome to a post apocalypse of magic and evil beings of fae. Mythology and magic brought to life and only a handful of wardens standing between civilization and chaos. I was voluntarily provided this free review copy audiobook by the author, narrator, or publisher.

Enjoyable read/listen

Wendigo Fever (Warden, #1), my fourteenth read from author Kevin Hardman. Well-written fantasy, with well-developed characters and story-line. With each book Hardman writes the story-line gets more enticing, drawing the reader deeper & deeper. Owning both the Audible & Kindle editions I was able to follow along while being read to. Narrator Mikael Naramore’s talented narration adds greatly to the book’s enjoyment & was a perfect choice for this book. I was given an Audible copy of this book & am voluntarily reviewing it. I’ll be reading more in this series. (RIP Marley January 20, 2014 - July 24, 2018).

Adventure Time!!!

A warden's job is to protect people from the monsters that lurk in the shadows. Errol is thrown into the position when his brother mysteriously disappears during a normal visit. Errol juggles helping the people they are tasked to help and finding his brother. He also finds that he's being hunted. I really enjoyed this book. It was very short and full of adventure. I listened to it in one sitting pretty much. I found myself absorbed into the story from the very beginning and I fully intend to read the rest of the series when I'm able to. It will definitely be worth it. There weren't really many characters in this story, but the two that were in it were pretty relatable. Errol is a normal sixteen-year-old kid who is self absorbed and wants a different future for himself than what his family wants. Then we have the feisty lady who decides to go with him after he helps her family get rid of a monster. I'm sad that I forget her name. She definitely had a lot of fight in her. Mikael Naramore, the narrator, did a pretty fantastic job narrating the story. I normally cringe at male narrators trying female dialogue. Mostly because they really overdo it. They make females sound really weird. I was impressed with his female voices though. It was a very refreshing change. I'll definitely listen to more books he narrates. I really enjoyed this story very much. It was a very short read that I managed to get done in one sitting while catching up on reviews. I was kind of surprised that the time passed honestly. I was very absorbed into the story.

Great Worldbuilding, Excited for More

The worldbuilding in this was absolutely excellent. You can tell the author put a lot of thought into the mechanics of the world and how it worked. It made it so very easy to immerse myself and really get into it. Very thought out and interesting story.

Wendigos and Missing Relatives

When his older brother disappears on a routine outing, 16 year old Errol has to step into the role of Warden that he's been training for while he searches for the missing Tom. On the journey, he bonds with the neighbour's daughter who becomes his travel companion, confronts monsters including the dreaded Wendigo and finds clues, and some hope for his brother's continued survival. This is a well written and fairly light hearted quest story with an interesting, YA hero and it's well read by narrator Mikael Naramore. I found it easy listening and quite enjoyable.

It’s okay.

I have to admit this story is pretty short. It was okay, nothing really great. Not a series that I would go out of my way to listen to. The concept was intriguing, but nothing that really drew me in.

Intriguing Monster Story

I love the premise, Wardens protecting people from monsters. I really liked Errol. He's not the area's Warden, just his brother, but has to take on the role when his brother goes missing. If you like monster books, then i'd recommend this. I thought the length was good. It had a good pace and didn't feel rushed. I'd like more info on the world though but i'm looking forward to more in the series. The narration by Mikael Naramore was fantastic. He really added a lot to the story with his performance.
