Zwei Grunddokumente markieren den Neubeginn, jedes auf seine Art verhängnisvoll: der Vertrag von Versailles, der zwar akzeptiert, aber nicht gutgeheißen wird, und die Weimarer Verfassung.
Golo Mann berichtet nicht nur von den politischen Ereignissen, sondern fragt auch nach der Rolle der Wirtschaft und der Intellektuellen in diesem labilen deutschen Gleichgewicht, das durch die Weltwirtschaftskrise 1929 noch weiter erschüttert wird.
