About this listen

A millionaire English lord dreams of founding a Utopian community on a remote Pacific island. Among the 40-odd men and women selected for the project are a pestologist named Camilla and the narrator. Within hours of the group's arrival on the sunny isle, their radio has been destroyed. Within days, several members of the group are dead. Dream turns to nightmare as they discover the island is overrun by a species programmed to resist and dominate any invader.

This novel, published after his death, is classic Wyndham. It features the tussle between mankind and nature and the consequences of nuclear activity. Also, women who are stronger than men. Not his best novel and labours on detail of science and society, in the way that Michael Crichton so often did. But it is good to see this novel back in circulation and it is well worth a listen.

Good early Wyndham

Very slow to get started, with all the background material examining the history behind the events. However, it does provide an interesting and thought provoking story regarding how nature is unconquerable no matter what humanity does.
It's a little dry, but worth the listen to provide food for thought

This is an interesting story with some interesting biological/ecological discussion sneaked into the story.

Good story, well told

I enjoyed this. it's a great story really well told by the narrator and the threat present on the island is made very real.

it is a product of its time though and I'm not sure the depiction of the islanders stands up in modern times.
