Summary

A millionaire English lord dreams of founding a Utopian community on a remote Pacific island. Among the 40-odd men and women selected for the project are a pestologist named Camilla and the narrator. Within hours of the group's arrival on the sunny isle, their radio has been destroyed. Within days, several members of the group are dead. Dream turns to nightmare as they discover the island is overrun by a species programmed to resist and dominate any invader.

enjoyed this

I enjoyed this. it's a great story really well told by the narrator and the threat present on the island is made very real.

it is a product of its time though and I'm not sure the depiction of the islanders stands up in modern times.

Another great Wyndham story

The lead up is interesting in itself and leaves you wondering about the book's title, but we get there in the end, and it doesn't disappoint.

Enjoyable #scifi

This was an entertaining novel, but I can't help feeling it was put on a shelf or abandoned. Then put together posthumously after the author passed away. I think it may have needed more of John Wyndham's attention. Perhaps this would have been so if the writer had lived a little longer. I would recommend as there are a lot of good parts.

"Little sisters."

Interesting novella which follows the attempt to establish a colony of people which could develop without the constraints of outside pressures. Unfortunately, the remote Pacific Island chosen had unexpected surprises. The first half on the story is mostly taken up with scene setting and does not really get established until after then.
Narration by Keith Wickham is immaculate, a perfect matching of reader and story.

Not as terrifying as one might hope...

from the creator of the Triffids, and no t by any means on a par with either "... Triffids" or "The Kraken Wakes" this short novella makes for a nonetheless enjoyable listening experience. It simply doesn't quite hit the target when trying to create an atmosphere of menace - such as that of "The Triffids" - or of a mood of gathering desolation such as is found in "The Kraken".

Although there's plenty of descriptions of the silent, ghostly jungle, and the weird behaviour of the mutant life-threatening spiders, they are just that - descriptions, which fall short of bringing the rather dry journalistic narrative really alive.

Much as I love John Wyndham, he isn't known for the depth and complexity of his characters at the best of times... The two main protagonists of "Web" are, it has to be admitted, even more lifeless and two-dimensional than usual...

All that said, though, this isn't a dreadful book, and as a fan of John Wyndham's better known titles, one that I am glad to have come across. Would recommend for an afternoon's entertainment when you've nothing else pressing to do / watch / read or listen to...

Slow start, great story

Definitely worth persevering if, like me, you'll find the opening chapters a bit overdeveloped (though the background story they tell is interesting...). Not a typical Wyndham novel, and at the same time, classic Wyndham. Absolutely not a dystopian piece as description suggests. The story and narration are, all things considered, utterly enjoyable.

Interesting little short story.

A great little story and pretty dark at points and a great narrator which isn't usual common on free audio books.

Definitely recommend

rather enjoyed it

Good narration with no silly voices used by the narrator. Classic Wyndham story, listen if you enjoy Wyndham.

Day of the triffids with spiders

You could probably forward past the first hour before the arrival on the island, then the story gets going.
