Boyle erzählt die weitgehend wahre Geschichte des schottischen Forschers Mungo Park, der Ende des 18. Jahrhunderts als erster Weißer den Verlauf des Niger erkundete und von seiner zweiten Reise nicht mehr zurückkam. Frei erfunden ist hingegen die Figur des Ned Rise, der mit dem spröden Briten die wildesten Abenteuer besteht. Den beiden Helden zugesellt ist ein phantastisches Panoptikum von Hexen und Schlägern, Kannibalen, Huren, Glücksrittern. Mit einem Wort: Boyle at his best!
