A decadent rock star. A deeply religious radio host. A disgraced scientist. And a teenage girl who may be the world's last hope. From the mind of Chuck Wendig comes an astonishing tapestry of humanity that Harlan Coben calls "a suspenseful, twisty, satisfying, surprising, thought-provoking epic."

Shana wakes up one morning to discover her little sister in the grip of a strange malady. She appears to be sleepwalking. She cannot talk and cannot be woken up. And she is heading with inexorable determination to a destination that only she knows. But Shana and her sister are not alone. Soon they are joined by a flock of sleepwalkers from across America, on the same mysterious journey. And, like Shana, there are other "shepherds" who follow the flock to protect their friends and family on the long dark road ahead.

For on their journey, they will discover an America convulsed with terror and violence, where this apocalyptic epidemic proves less dangerous than the fear of it. As the rest of society collapses all around them-and an ultraviolent militia threatens to exterminate them-the fate of the sleepwalkers depends on unraveling the mystery behind the epidemic. The terrifying secret will either tear the nation apart-or bring the survivors together to remake a shattered world.

I’m not sure I would say I loved the story, it’s a brilliant story very well narrated but the subject matter is so close to now or how the now could deteriorate that I had nightmares for days... still, I would totally recommend it if you fancy very well drawn characters and a believable pandemic story line and what happens when men with guns and super egos take control... If there is a book 2 coming I’ll be first in line

Wow, kept me up long past my bedtime!

Really enjoyed the story to this one but unfortunately found myself not enjoying the two narrators. Xe Sands sounds constantly smug and talks far too quietly, barely even attempts to change her voice for different characters. Then there's Dominic Hoffman who... For some.. Insane....... reason always talks..... With huge.... gaps in each ...... sentence. Arrrgh!!!

Great book, annoying narration

Hated the narration. Get better narrators for this book and try again, Whoever hired them should be sacked

Story ruined by narrators

It’s overlong but still a well told tales of a collapse of civilisation and an attempt to recover something from the ashes. Looking forward to the sequel.

Pity Robert Vaughn wasn’t around to do the voice of the AI.

Narration was good.

Overlong

A long epic walk (literally) across America as climate change, flu empire ice and far right politics collide. Not 100% sure I understand the ending and as a protagonist Shana is not the most endearing (loved Pete and Marcie) but you come to care and kept be captivated.

Slow burn that stays with you
