About this listen

She has dealt with her fair share of issues, having raised four children. Drug addiction, school suspensions, suicide scares, childhood disease, and her oldest daughter being gang raped, which led to a teen pregnancy. Finally, they were all young adults, and it seemed as if the worst was behind them until the oldest daughter came home one day and told them something that made their world stop. For months, it was like someone had pushed the slow-motion button on the remote of their lives as they tried to comprehend what their daughter must have gone through without them knowing anything.

Following in her daughter's footsteps, she discovered it is possible to turn pain into purpose by allowing others to walk a mile with her.

The most malicious thing about abuse is that it can happen to anyone, at any time, for no reason at all. When you think about sex trafficking you automatically think of shadows, darkness, dinginess; of crossing state lines, or countries; but domestic sex trafficking can occur in the open, in the light, and signs are easily missed due to the targeting of already vulnerable individuals.
It is moving in itself to be aware that, where sex trafficking occurs to an individual with a loving family, the family may deal with feelings of guilt and shame alongside the survivor, when the victimisation is no one’s fault but the perpetrator. The most emotionally impactful part of this book is the fact that the family at the centre of this story is so normal; it really hammers home that anyone can be victimised. Overall, I enjoyed this book, as much as one can enjoy a harrowing experience such as this, and it will stick with me for a while yet how insidious domestic sex trafficking is.

What an awful experience; yet one that is so prudent to discuss.

A heartbreaking true story of rape and sex trafficking from a mother’s perspective; highlighting the fact that anybody - and any family - can fall victim to exploitation…. A must read for parents!

The author takes you into her home and walks you through her children’s upbringings within a loving family; before parental intuition alarms that something’s not quite; and then finally, to a mother facing the most devastating of revelations.
An informative and important insight into the secondary victimisation of domestic sex trafficking and the lived family trauma this heinous crime caused. The book provides a unique perspective into domestic sex trafficking and how perpetrators can prey on the vulnerabilities and dreams of young people to sexually exploit them.

The authors hindsight provides a chilling family tale of lessons learned and a journey of redemption, from victims to advocates. Highlighting the importance of awareness and the correlation between coercion and consent, ultimately providing a blueprint of awareness and prevention for parents.
