WOULD IT BE SO BAD, TO BE DEVOURED?

Fi has carved out a career as a cross-dimensional smuggler by sticking to simple rules: keep your routes secret, always draw your energy sword first, and - at all costs - avoid the daeyari, the carnivorous immortals who have ruled for millennia.

When she's hired to smuggle a bomb into the capital, instinct tells her the risk isn't worth the pay, but the entreaty of a long-lost friend guilts her into accepting. Until the heist goes terribly wrong, and Fi is thrown at the feet of the daeyari lord, Antal, as payment.

Antal is a hunter - cold and cunning and furious at Fi for her part in the attack on his city. Her saving grace is a common enemy: he'll spare her if she helps him uncover who masterminded the scheme. To save her life, her family, and the village she calls home, Fi must join Antal on a new hunt with far higher stakes than she's ever faced before, bartering with neighbouring immortals who might offer an alliance - or tear their throats out in the snow.

She's always known the dangers of her trade - and of the power she's wielded since childhood, allowing her to see the secret doors between realities, to walk the Void itself. But nothing could have prepared her for meeting Antal. For the deal she's been forced to make, and what that deal might ignite. A revolution. And a temptation - for how sweet the monster's fangs might feel.

From the author of instant Sunday Times bestseller The Phoenix Keeper comes a dazzling new fantasy universe unmissable for fans of the world-building scale of Sarah J. Maas and the world-shifting stakes of Rebecca Yarros.©2025 Sarah MacLean

Critic reviews

Voidwalker is a gorgeous, genre-defying journey through broken worlds. MacLean's prose is addictive, her plotting, deft, her worldbuilding, fascinating and atmospheric. I dove through page after page, glorying in the bloody, beautiful chaos of it all. (Send help, I may now have a thing for antlers)
Against a vivid world shattered by shadow and fear, MacLean's characters blaze fierce, flawed, and unforgettable. Voidwalker is your vicious new obsession
For everyone who wished the beast hadn't turned back into a human . . . MacLean has crafted a unique world that feels at once familiar and yet entirely her own. The characters claw their way into your heart and leash you to their story from the very first page and I'm not sure if I devoured the book or if it devoured me
Voidwalker is a book that bites back. Utterly unputdownable! I stayed up way too late reading about Fionamara, the ferocious protagonist desperate to hide her soft heartedness; and Antal, whose monstrous nature makes him all the more alluring. Set against the backdrop of a gritty world with a unique magic system, Voidwalker's twists and turns pulled me in, chewed me up, and spit me out - and I couldn't have been more thrilled. Readers searching for a romantasy that feels truly new will adore this book!
Voidwalker devoured me, as entirely as a daeyari devours a sacrifice. This book is deliciously sharp, achingly romantic, and gloriously messy in only the best ways. Feral and flirtatious, it's equal parts teeth and tenderness. Fi and Antal's banter made me laugh, scream, and fall headfirst into the Void. I'd walk between worlds for this book. My new obsession, and easily a new favourite
Populated by monsters as seductive as sharp teeth at your throat, Voidwalker features deliciously tender depictions of grief and forgiveness. I was enamored by foul-mouthed Fionamara and man-eating Void monster Antal: the biggest Green Flag with antlers across any of the cosmic planes
Voidwalker is epic and stunningly original. A fierce heroine, an equally ferocious hero (with a tail!), an exquisitely sexy romance, a fascinating and immersive world... What's not to love? I'm utterly obsessed
MacLean hits all the right notes in this rip-roaring romantasy . . . MacLean expertly balances romance and fantasy, keeping up the plot's momentum without skimping on steamy scenes. Monster romance fans should snap this up
A spicy enemies-to-lovers monster romance about a smuggler who finds herself allied with her worst nightmares-and falling for them . . . In this series starter, the lines between predator and prey become blurred in the most delicious ways. With enjoyable characters, relatable themes, and a hot romance, Voidwalker will leave readers pining for the next installment in the Beasts of the Void series

Void hopping/travel, politics, survival, smuggling and romance. I liked the slow-burning love story between Fi and Antal and how they both learned to accept themselves with their flaws.

My own assessment is that this is a pretty tame monster romance, so I could recommend this to beginners. The book ended well, but I want more. The world was interesting and there is room for expansion, I would love to read more connecting standalone romances set in the same world.

I hope connected standalones!
