About this listen

The definitive story of the extraordinary and surprising success of English wine—and the people who transformed our reputation on the global stage from that of a joke to world-class in 30 years.

From an amateur affair made by retirees to a multi-million-pound industry with quality to rival Champagne, the rise of English wine has been one of the more unexpected wine stories of the past 30 years. In this illuminating and accessible account, award-winning drinks writer Henry Jeffreys takes you behind the scenes of the English wine revolution. It's a story about changing climate and technology but most of all it's about men and women with vision, determination and more than a little bloody-mindedness. From secretive billionaires to the single mother farming a couple of hectares in Kent, these are the people making wine in a cold climate.

As someone who has been a UK based wine merchant for the best part of 30 years I was hugely looking forward to this book and wasn’t disappointed. UK production is changing so fast I will look forward to seeing part 2 in 5 or 10 years time! Highly recommended for anyone with even a passing interest in English wine. Bravo!

Anyone who has half an interest in the background to English wine, then this is a must listen. Fascinating characters behind the industry and the people who have persevered against the odds to make the industry what it is. Thanks Henry, a brilliant listen to a relative new comer to the industry.

Great if you wish to understand more about the history of UK wine but the closer it gets to the present day the misinformation becomes more frequent and actually (I feel) contributes to a lot the misunderstanding and closed mindedness of how wine is progressing in England currently. It’s worth a listen for sure but I’d advise a pinch of salt from chapter 8 onwards. Some of the stories are pretty wild and inaccurate minus the conversations from Daniel Ham who is unquestionably one of the best winemakers in the UK

Interesting but misinformed
