"Villette" è il nome di una città immaginaria del continente dove una giovane donna inglese approda "in cerca di fortuna", si potrebbe dire, se in realtà la sua non fosse quasi una scelta obbligata, intrapresa per la necessità di sopravvivere e per la fuga da un deserto affettivo. "Potrei fare anche la sguattera pur di non fare l'istitutrice in una casa privata" sostiene la protagonista, ripetendo una convinzione già espressa dall'autrice nell'altro suo romanzo, "Shirley". Dunque Lucy, la protagonista, decide di impegnarsi come governante in un pensionato e presto diventa insegnante.
Il romanzo di formazione al femminile segue così una linea già tracciata negli scritti dell'autrice, anche se i sentimenti, le convinzioni, vengono qui espressi più appassionatamente che nel passato. E se alcune pagine di questo libro sembreranno al lettore pervase di rabbia e pregiudizi contro la chiesa cattolica, "Roma", i "Papisti", allora che pensi all'infanzia e alla vita della scrittrice, allevata da un padre che era un severo pastore protestante, scrittore egli stesso di poemetti religiosi, educata, orfana di madre, in un collegio religioso, mortificata nella sua fame di cultura e di esperienze a causa della sua povertà.©2015 Silvia Cecchini (P)2016 Silvia Cecchini
