Summary

Unemployed accountant Sophie Masterson never dreams that a trip to Salem on Halloween night will change her life forever. When a birthday gift of a psychic reading is thrust upon her by her best friend, Sophie has no choice but to play along. She wants the winning lottery numbers but, instead, receives something far more ominous-a warning of things to come. Being told her own clairvoyant abilities will soon surface should be enough to send any woman running to hide. Throw in the possibility that something sinister is headed her way and all she wants is an easy out.

When asked to help her brother, the police chief, with some easy filing, she's sure that her problems are over. She now has an income, a job, and a safe haven where she can relax. What she doesn't expect is that one of those files will be the catalyst to set the wheels in motion for the predictions to come true.

Detective Jack Love has a hard time following instructions. When his latest bust gets him benched, and shoved in the cold case filing room, the last thing he expects is to be tasked with babysitting the chief's sister. When unqualified and in-need-of-medication Sophie gets the crazy idea to play detective on a case gone cold, there is little he can do to dissuade her from investigating.

Wonderfully entertaining

This is a wonderful series of stories following the same people throughout all of the books, solving different cases. The brilliant narration makes the box set easy and thrilling to listen to. I enjoyed these books so much I struggled to press stop.

Seriously painful listen

If you enjoy the sound of nasal speech then I suggest you listen to this book. The story itself is ok, but the narrator’s nasal speech is off-putting. I will be avoiding all books narrated by Tess Irondale.

It’s ok

The narration is great, plot line works... should be a great series But... the romance is old... the female lead when is is without the males in the book becomes needy...I made it through book 1 and 2...barely ( I just half listened). I think I will go and read a zombie apocalypse series to get the sugar out of my ears...

Okay stories. Good Narration.

Well this was a long book. It did have "4 stories" however, the first 3 could have been one book to be honest. The 4th story was about different people.

So book one Lifting the Veil was interesting and had my attention. I liked Sophie she was strong and I Jack was kind of immature to me and I wasn't real thrilled with him. But he wasn't the worst. There was some mystery going on here and her abilities come to life. Rather quick really.

The second book, Beyond the Veil was a little better and I liked Marshall with Sophie so much more than with Jack, he was much more mature and sexy. There was a bit of mystery in this story as well. And sex.

The third book, Veiled Intentions was good except at this point I am totally sick of Sophie. Her whole personality just changed she acted like she was the boss, the one with the most experience and knowledge. Really?? She was a graduated accountant (never actually working as an accountant) when she got a job as a file clerk at the police station. But within 8 months she acted like she was totally in charge and knew more than the these guys who have been working security and were Seals. UGH..

The fourth book Veiled Threats was NOT about SOPHIE! YAY! I was so glad. It was about her best friend Amber and Aiden. What a relief.
This might be my favorite, just because I was really sick of Sophie's entitled bossy attitude.

There was a lot of dialogue throughout all 4 books which was great, I love lots of dialogue. There was sex so this was not rated G. Not erotica.

As for the narration, it was pretty good. This was my first listen to Tess Irondale, I would listen to her again. She did the men's voices well and the gave everyone their own voice. She read with emotion and had a nice reading voice.

I did get this book as a free read with my KU subscription and 1.99 for the audible.

Annoying narration and characters

An interesting story in theory, but the delivery of the narrator made it hard to listen to. Not sure why the male lead is supposed to be appealing. I shut it off when he started thinking to himself how he would have "taken" the female lead had she not been his boss's sister. Apparently her complete lack of interest wasn't a concern. Gross.

Mystery & Romance

Good stories, with mystery, romance, could have done without the steamy sex, seemed to distract from the plot. Well narrated by

Good Mysteries

The stories were good with intriguing mysteries. The female characters were a bit whiny while proclaiming what strong women they were. The narrator does a horrible job with the male voices. They either sound like they have a three pack a day smoking habit, or they are gangsters from the 1940s.

Review for 1 1/2 books..

As to the first book:

It was a very good story in itself. I mean it did leave it open for another book but it certainly wasn’t a cliffhanger. So, you could read this and have a HEA or move forward to the opening the author left, or not.

I was surprised at who the killer was, rather the second killer, and he was slightly crazy. His reasons for killing were just insane. And he did get all that he deserved.

I did like the players: Jack and Sophie, Amber, Eileen and Max, Marshall, and Sophie’s guide Will. I was a little concerned about how the author had Sophie having kind of sexual feeling for Marshall while sleeping with Jack, and Marshall doesn’t hide the fact the he wants Sophie. This story turned out OK but I do hope Marshall finds a love interest. What I didn’t like about this was when Jack left her in the hospital and was gone for 2 weeks then came back and told Sophie how stupid he’d been. Really? It took him two whole weeks to figure that out? A day or two of missing her I can see but not 2 weeks. That was just silly.

There was some very explicit sex in the book and some swearing and the F-bomb was dropped around 20 times.

HALF the second book:

This is not for all the books because I couldn't read past half of the second book. It became a terrible romance.

When the last book ended Sophie and Jack said they love each other but I was still worried about Marshall's feelings for Sophie's and her's for him. Then in this book her house was bugged and she couldn't reach Jack so she called Marshall and he took her to his house and he told Sophie he broke up with his girlfriend because of Sophie, and Sophie told him she felt that "pull" towards him too. Even if nothing happens between them I just can't read a book where the hero or heroine have sexual feelings for someone else. That's not my idea of a good romance. It's good for some but not for me.

As to the narrator: She was not quite OK. Her voice for most of the men were fine but the voice she gave to the hero was just terrible. He sounded just like a 2-pack-a-day smoker, or maybe 3 packs. All I know was that his voice was terrible. She did whisper when the book called for it but nothing else. All she did was read the book.

Not an Enjoyable Story

Would you try another book from Kate Allenton and/or Tess Irondale?

Tess yes, Kate, I don't think so.

What was most disappointing about Kate Allenton’s story?

The behavior of the characters was unlikely - even annoying

Which character – as performed by Tess Irondale – was your favorite?

All the characters were good as performed by Tess. Unfortunately, good narration cannot improve the writing.

If you could play editor, what scene or scenes would you have cut from Veiled Set: Sophie Masterson/Dixon Security Series?

too hard to choose which part to cut since so many of them should have been edited ruthlessly
