Enthralling

I really enjoyed this series. The author is creative but I do agree that there was a little too much teenage angst throughout it. I'd recommend the listen.

I was making excuses to listen!

I couldn't put it down. i was listening every chance I had. The characters were real, even though there was a bit too much teenage angst it did ring true. Can't wait for more dream travelers

A story dancing between the light and dark.

This series is something that would have had me daydreaming for weeks as a teenager. It has everything I loved: magic, romance, adventure, and independent, quick-witted teenage protagonists. I have to concede, however, that I am no longer the target audience for this series.

Each individual element of the story, I think, was pretty good, but they didn't always mesh well. The romance felt believably like it belonged to teenagers. The silly arguments and pining all fit the love story well. Similarly, the darker elements felt threatening and the lengths our heroes had to go to felt mostly justified. However, the romance and the darker elements clashed when juxtaposed. I often wanted to shake our protagonists for their petty romantic pouting when people they loved were in dire situations and relying on them.

There were a few situations that felt very silly. Jack's brothers' success was a little over-the-top, as was Zuma's home life.

Ultimately, the bouncing between the light, childish moments and the honestly horrifying, darkness of certain situations was a bit disorienting.

The key notes of the story stand out as enjoyable and I think that's what kept me with series, along with some of the characters (like Ian) and the fantastic voice acting.

This is a large and varied cast and all characters are represented with a unique voice, making each instantly recognizable as they appear in the story. The narration (without character voices) is clear and gentle and enjoyable to listen to. My favorite voices were Ian's and Finley's. The characters are very different and their voices reflect those differences well (all the way down to Ian's gentle lisp from his braces).

This is a great series for a teen, or anyone who enjoys young adult novels and doesn't mind the little bit of melodrama that comes with the genre.

Interesting premise, slow start builds to suspense

This box set includes all three novels in Sarah Noffke’s Vagabond Circus series of young adult paranormal fantasy, which is part of her Dream Traveler universe. It’s an interesting world, and I always enjoy learning about different Dream Travelers and their abilities. Each novel tells part of a continuing story, so the box set is a convenient way to read them in order.

I loved the premise of a circus of orphan Dream Travelers struggling to survive, but the story gets off to a slow start. It gets much more exciting and suspenseful toward the end, and the conclusion was satisfying.

The story is told in short chapters that alternate among many different characters’ points of view. I found that a bit jarring, although it does allow the reader to know and understand the characters better, particularly by the time we get to the final novel. Most of the characters are interesting, but a few are too one-dimensional and not at all likeable. In fact, my biggest complaint about this book is that the villains are so completely over the top. Ms. Noffke has written plenty of fascinating, complex characters, and I wish she would invest more effort in creating complex, relatable villains.

Note that the book includes descriptions of violence, gory injuries, death, and horrendous child abuse.

Steve Barnes did a fine job with narration. He’s easy to understand, and his pacing is good. He created interesting character voices and conveyed emotions well. I could easily imagine Charles Knight twirling his mustache while laughing maliciously. His voice struck me as a bit too breathy and sibilant in the first book, but that improved for the latter two books.

The author provided me with a free copy of this audiobook, and I volunteered to provide an honest review.
