About this listen

As the Nazis march toward Paris in 1940, American ballerina Lucie Girard buys her favorite English-language bookstore to allow the Jewish owners to escape. Lucie struggles to run Green Leaf Books due to oppressive German laws and harsh conditions, but she finds a way to aid the resistance by passing secret messages between the pages of her books.

Widower Paul Aubrey wants nothing more than to return to the States with his little girl, but the US Army convinces him to keep his factory running and obtain military information from his German customers. As the war rages on, Paul offers his own resistance by sabotaging his product and hiding British airmen in his factory. After they meet in the bookstore, Paul and Lucie are drawn to each other, but she rejects him when she discovers he sells to the Germans. And for Paul to win her trust would mean betraying his mission.

Master of WWII-era fiction Sarah Sundin invites you onto the streets of occupied Paris to discover whether love or duty will prevail.

I was a bit put off by comments about the narrator but as this was a free download with my subscription, I thought I’d give it a go. I have to say really enjoyed this audiobook and the narration. The story hooked you in right from the beginning and had a number of unexpected twists and turns. The pace of the story was really good and kept me listening late into the night. I really liked the authors style of writing so will definitely look for more titles by her.

Great story that hooked you in from the start

Had me gripped from the start, but almost couldn’t finish it as the narrator was awful! So robotic, I only continued because the story was so good

Loved this book so much ...excellent story ...tense in places.
Another example of the bravery and love that was so typical during such a dangerous time. where people risked their lives to help others.
the Narrator was great too.

The story was good, though written from an American perspective in Europe in the early war, which is different from most wwII books. The narrator wasn’t very good. She had a very strange staccato like tendre and butchered the French pronounciation to the point where some of the words were unrecognizable. Still, it was worth the listen.

Wonderful story
