 Im Oderbruchdorf Tschechin lebt der Wirt Abel Hradscheck über seine Verhältnisse. Er trinkt, spielt und überhäuft seine Frau mit teuren Geschenken. Hochverschuldet bringt ihn der Besuch des Weinhändlers Szulski, der auf sein Geld drängt, in eine prekäre Lage.
