About this listen

He’s her neighbor…her enemy…so why has she told everyone he’s her boyfriend?

Sky Williams has a neighbor from hell. Every day, Becket finds a new way to torture her. Sometimes it involves cutting trees on her property line; other days—most days—it includes using an annoying nickname he knows she hates. It’s safe to say she can’t stand the guy. So why then, when her parents persistently try to set her up with one of their church friends, does she find herself blurting out that she’s dating Becket?

Retired Navy SEAL Becket Hayes has a great life. His family is amazing, he’s the fire chief of Amber Ridge—a job he loves. And more recently, he’s found unexpected joy in fighting with his cute but easily riled neighbor. She seems to take offense in his very existence. So when she publicly declares Becket as her boyfriend, he’s intrigued enough to play along. It’s just meant to be for show, but the longer they “date”, the less fake it feels.

When a string of seemingly unconnected incidents occur, putting Sky’s life in danger, Becket suddenly has even more reason to remain close. It appears there are parts of her past that refuse to be left behind. And someone determined to ensure Sky has no future—with or without Becket.

Nyssa Kathryn. I just see her name and I know I am going to escape in her book and not come out until I am I finished. This is the second book in the Amber Ridge and it's a blast! Sky does not like her intrusive neighbor. Beckett is the Chief of the local fire department, and the biggest jerk she knows. He is insistent about trimming her tree and she will do anything to prevent him from touching it. But when it comes to her parents bothering her about settling down, she grabs Beckett as a pretend boyfriend, things are about to change. Tragedy seems to follow Sky though, and it seems Beckett is constantly saving her. Why is she being targeted? Is it actually her that is the one in trouble? Can he keep her safe? This story takes twists and turns, has swoon worthy moments and keeps that small town feel with all the neighbors and suspects. Loved this installment, it was full of romance and incredible suspense!

Aiden Snow and CJ Bloom are the story tellers for this one, and I was all in from the first line. These two provide a duet narration that is flawless and entertaining. The banter, the passion, the push pull. the thrill of the twists and turns all come to life as they voice the story. I loved the flow, the emotions and the chemistry between these two and highly recommend this listen.

Nyssa Kathryn welcomes you back to Amber Ridge for another wonderful small town romance, an enemies-to-lovers romantic suspense that captivates your attention and tugs at your heartstrings the entire time. This second book of the series is Becket Hayes, the Fire Chief of Amber Ridge, and Sky Williams, owner of a doggy day care in town and Becket’s fairly new neighbor. Sky took an immediate disliking to her annoying neighbor, and she was not afraid to share her dislike to Becket, which edges him on and makes him even more annoying. There is something about Sky that makes Becket want to get under her skin, maybe it is her snark and witty comeback or that she gives as good as she gets. The man just infuriates her, but when her mother tries to fix her up with Tony, a guy from her parent’s church, she blurts out that she has a boyfriend and the first person who comes to mind is Becket. Becket was happy to take the role of her fake boyfriend, even happier to spend some time with her. The chemistry between those two was electric, and all that bickering and back-and-forth banter was their foreplay. He picks up on Sky’s battle with some inner demons, which she isn’t ready to share with him right away, but when some shady incidents happen, she thinks trouble follows her and he thinks trouble is after her. I loved all the layers of this story and how it all plays out, with the perfect balance of drama, a touch of angst, witty dialogue and humor, some charming and heartwarming moments, mystery, thrilling and suspenseful moments, heartfelt emotions, and a slow burn, but so worth the wait romance. Kathryn keeps you wondering and on your toes for the suspenseful storylines, and just when you think you figured out who was responsible, she pulls the rug out from under you and presents an “I never saw that coming moment”, well done, very well done. As always, the writing, plot and world building are fantastic, as are the character growth and development. Nyssa Kathryn, thank you for another fabulous story and emotional rollercoaster ride.

🎧📚🎧 CJ Bloom and Aiden Snow did a fabulous job bringing these characters to life, giving each their own voice, and I loved how they took each role and made it their own, sounding believable and just as I imagined the characters would sound. Both were naturals in the lead roles, grasping every aspect of their personality and demeanor. Bloom’s Sky was absolute perfection, handled her witty dialogue effortlessly and brought out her every emotion. Snow did the same in Becket’s role and was just as amazing. They were fantastic covering the roles of the secondary and side characters and their talent and versatility as voice artists truly shined. These entertaining storytellers are a pleasure to listen to and their and their captivating performance keeps you riveted to the story.

Sky and Becket are neighbours, and he manages to irritate her with every interaction they have. You can tell from the offset that he just loves riling her up, and the insults and snark she sent back was brilliant. I loved their conversations.

They start to fake date so that Sky can get her parents' matchmaking to stop, and Beckett takes the job very seriously. Things heat up and get very steamy.

We don't just get these two arguing. We also get quite a bit of suspense woven into the story and from a couple of angles. It seems someone is out to hurt Sky, and Becket is determined to keep her safe.

I love Nyssa's books. They have the perfect combination of suspense and heat. It was action-packed and had me hooked to the last page.

The narration for this book was perfect, it's in duet style so having the voices for each character just pulls you completely into the story, especially with all the banter between these two. The voices are exactly how I imagined the characters to sound like.

Loved the banter between the main characters

Oh my gawd did I go through the gamut of emotions with this one! This small-town romance has everything I love - fake dating, slow-burn tension, and just the right amount of chaos.

Skyler and Becket’s chemistry was palpable in book 1, so I was very excited for their story. Thee two can’t stand each other (like, at all), but when a messy situation calls for a fake relationship, things take a turn. Nyssa wrote their dislike-to-lovers vibe so perfectly and it felt super natural and sweet with the way they ended up together.

The suspense sub-plot was so cleverly woven in throughout all the other little moments until it all really started ramping up and all the little pieces started clicking into place.

If you’re into sarcastic back-and-forths, tension that simmers until it snaps, and characters who are equal parts hilarious and chaotic, this one’s a total binge-read. Sky’s sass and Beckett’s grumpy energy make them a perfect mess together—and I loved every second of it.

Things I struggled with/tr!ggers: mentions of pet death in a fire (recollections/in the past), overbearing parents that put their church/religion before their daughter’s wishes and try to push her to date someone from the church

This small-town romance has everything I love

Nyssa Kathryn writes my favourite small town romances; they are such a good blend of the sweet elements of small town with suspense and a mystery driving the plot. Unraveled had me fooled into thinking it was going to be more of a romcom with the fake dating trope and although there are some really funny moments involving chainsaws, fences, and trees, there is a great plot surrounding Skye and her past which hooked me straight away. It feels a little like a book of two halves as the suspense creeps up on you after the focus being on the fake dating but it leads to some interesting twists and turns and I was genuinely surprised at the culprit.

Skye is a likeable FMC and Becket getting under her skin was consistently funny although how she managed to put up with her meddling matchmaking parents was beyond me. I loved seeing the Hayes family again too (Pam is still a sweetheart) and Becket's relationships with his siblings is always good fun to listen to. The banter in this book was made for duet narration and with the talent that is CJ Bloom and Aiden Snow taking the reins you cannot help but love these characters. The audio is just top notch. Clara and Holden look to be up next and I think its going to be more of an angsty one after the hints dropped in this book.

My interpretation of the star system;
3 stars - I enjoyed it; would read the author again
4 stars - I really liked it; I am invested and definitely want more from this author/series
5 stars - I loved it; I engaged with this book completely until I finished it and it is one I will re-read

All the snarky banter
