Q&A with the author:

How would you describe this series?

It's Regency England with a dash of magic. I hope to take readers on a journey from the glittering ballrooms of the aristocracy to the dark underbelly of Regency England - with passion, danger, adventure, romance, and a little magic thrown into the mix.

Why did you write this series?

I wanted to get my well-bred heroines out of the drawing rooms and put them in the way of adventure and romance. But I didn’t want to write a series where magic is common; I wanted to write a series where only a few characters have magic, and it’s a deep, dark secret, and no one else knows.

How would you describe your writing?

Several reviewers have likened my writing to Georgette Heyer, which is the hugest compliment ever. I adore Georgette Heyer! She’s why I write historical romance, and I reread her books over and over. (If you’ve not read The Grand Sophy, please do so!) I’ve also had readers compare my writing to Courtney Milan and Mary Balogh, which are also massive compliments.

Who would like this series?

This series will appeal to readers who enjoy the historical backdrop of Georgette Heyer and Jane Austen, the emotion of Mary Balogh and Courtney Milan, and the magic of Patricia Rice and Mary Robinette Kowal. Quite a broad range, really!

The ideal reading order would be:

  • The Fey Quartet (series prequel)
  • Maythorn’s Wish
  • Hazel’s Promise
  • Ivy’s Choice
  • Larkspur’s Quest

The Baleful Godmother series

  • Unmasking Miss Appleby
  • Resisting Miss Merryweather
  • Trusting Miss Trentham
  • Claiming Mister Kemp
  • Ruining Miss Wrotham
  • Discovering Miss Dalrymple

Plus three more interlinked Baleful Godmother series to come.

Happy listening!

First fantasy book I've enjoyed so much.

Gripping story with engaging characters, expertly read. Rosalyn Landor is gracefully managing even the cringe-worthy sex scenes, her honeyed voice is good addition to the success of the book.
Will be re-listening, loved the humour and surprising twists of the plot.

Interesting story

Strange plot for a romance but it was a good plot and I enjoyed it. Sizzle rating 1-5 is 3.5 IMO.
Narrator made this book. Another may not have been able to pull off this strange plot with a woman changing shape :)

A Delightful Romp

This was an oddest of comedies - requiring a willing suspension of disbelief. I did and was rewarded.

Delightfully Different

I'm not much into fantastical stories, but this delightful story pulled me in almost from the begining. The story line, the well-developed characters and Rosalyn Landor made it seem like fantasy can be real. This is my first book by this talented new author....but not my last.

I want more!

Great book. Unexpected and unanticipated plot twists, sexy, unique. Loved it! I don’t like unrealistic type books and I read this one had a touch of magic, so I wasn’t going to get it but thought I’d try something different. So glad I did. Even the magical parts were relatable and understandable. My only disappointment was there wasn’t more to download. I want another. Come on audible get us another one from her!

Sweet story with a touch of magic. Good, flawed people with baggage fell in love under transformative circumstances.

Love this

Loved the story but Rosalyn Landor really brings the story and characters to life. I especially liked that magic that wove the plot together. Very sweet ending.

excellent narrator of light escapist novel

I had previously read this fantasy historical romance. It's an easy light novel. I saw the story on audible and bought it for long journey, choosing it based on the price.

The narrator is excellent at voicing the various characters in the story. I enjoyed listening to the story more than reading it!

Okay book, but way too long..

This didn’t even get interesting until Marcus found out about Charlotte, at about 50%. Then they really got busy on finding out who was trying to ruin and then kill Marcus. And when they found out who it was and why he was doing it I was totally disgusted.
And there was a little too much about sex, too much sex talk from Marcus to Charlotte/Christopher, and Charlotte/Christopher’s thoughts about her “pego.” Thirty times it was mentioned. Really, 393 pages was just too much of this book. Halfway through the book all the feelings were one-sided because of Marcus not knowing about her/his shapeshifting.

I will not be reading the next book to see if they get any better because it’s 3 hours and 49 minutes and it costs $7.49. So over $10 for the book, it has 159 pages, and audible. The same price as the 393 as this book. Totally out of line. AND since Audible told me the authors and publishers set the price it makes it twice as bad.

I think they had sex 4 or 5 times and each time it was pretty graphic, so that took up a lot of pages in the book. And the
F-bomb was used 11 times.

As to the narration: Rosalyn Landor did a very good job on all the voices and her emotions were great.

EXCELLANT NARRATION BY ROSALYN LANDOR

On Charlotte Appleby's 25th Birthday she is visited by A Fairie. The Fairie tells her she can choose any gift she wants from translocation, Invisibility, Levitation/Flying and Metamorphosis the ability to change shape. She chooses Metamorphosis because being female in 1805 will be difficult if not impossible to find a job with the same salary as a man would recieve. She has seen an ad for Secretary to the Earl of Cosgrove, Marcus Langford.

Marcus Langford the Earl of Cosgrove is called cockled Cosgrove because his deceased wife Lavinia was having sexual affairs with any man she could even his best friend. Marcus hires Christopher Albin AKA Charlotte Appleby after him and his long time secretary Lionel are attacked by 3 men. Lionel is serverly hurt and might never work again.

Someone is trying to kill Marcus he tells Albin/Charlotte who he thinks might be the culprit. The rest of the story is a hunt to find out who is breaking all of the glass windows every few days in Marcus's home and who keeps attacking him and putting piles of S h i t on his doorsteps. This is were the story looses some of its strength. You could hire enough bow street runners or guards to surround your property. Instead they go on a constant hunt that seems to lead nowhere until Albin/Charlotte changes shapes and follows after the scent of the culprit.

Eventually Marcus meets the real Charlotte and they start having sex. It felt so impersonal and sterile. There love making had no romance or passion. Just sex. About 80% into the story Marcus finds out what Albin is and then he connects him to being Charlotte. He is furious because he thinks he has been having sex with a Man!!

The story was well written Its just that Charlotte stays in Male form "Albin" way to much and to
long. It started to feel weird to me. I wish there had been more encounters with Charlotte as she truly was. A female! The story didn't really feel like it was taking place in 1805 it had more of a modern today feel to it.
