About this listen

Darren Hayes was always a storyteller. As a child, in suburban Queensland in the 1970s, he told himself he was going to be a pop star - and he did it. Throughout Savage Garden's astonishing success - which included multiple Australian number 1s, cracking the US charts and selling more than 35 million albums worldwide - he kept telling us stories of love and longing, through his vulnerable, open song lyrics.

But the reality of his life was much more complicated than the constraints of a three-minute pop song.
In Unlovable, for the first time, Darren recounts the events and circumstances that shaped his unique life: from the childhood trauma of growing up with a violent, alcoholic father, his journey with depression, to the dizzying heights of worldwide fame in Savage Garden, and everything in between.

Told in his own lyrical words, Unlovable is a magical dark fairytale that reclaims the terrors and obstacles of his past to reveal the fabulous artist he has become.

Wow what a journey Darren took us on. It’s a moving tale which had me in tears several times remembering my own traumatic childhood. Brilliantly read. I’ve loved this man’s music for more years than a care to remember. Being so honest and humble in this book which must’ve been so painful at times only made me love him more for his courage and healing.

Superbly narrated by Darren be fully prepared to embark upon an emotional rollercoaster as he recounts his journey from the cradle to 2024.

This was a really good and honest listen, even when it was obviously painful for Darren to share the memories.
There are some very happy moments and things that happened in relation to tours and performances I was luckily able to attend and remember myself.
Such a brave memoir.

I began listening to this book, thinking that it was going to be a feast of the stories of talent, showmanship, glitter and glam from the amazing performer, Darren Hayes. Instead, I was taken into the very dark and immensely sad world of an abused, traumatised little boy, desperately trying to survive and to feel loved! To say this was an emotional rollercoaster to listen to is a massive understatement. The fact that Darren was able to write, let alone narrate his own history is a testament to his determination and efforts to come to terms with the abuse he suffered at the hands of his father and how it has affected his whole life.
I am so full of admiration and love for him which now far exceeds the feelings I have for him as one of my favourite pop stars and someone who I have seen many times on his incredible stage shows.
This was a difficult, emotional and yet compulsive story to listen to. I feel privileged to have heard it from his own mouth and now his brilliant songs make far more sense. Now, listening to them brings me so much closer to the wonderful human being that is Darren Hayes. Thankyou for having the courage to tell the world!
