Summary

Gil Truman has eyes only for the beautiful Tilly - until he is forced to marry plain, sickly Rose Davenport to reclaim the lands his father foolishly gambled away. After a disastrous wedding night tainted with his bitterness, he deposits Rose at his remote, Northumbrian estate, soothing his guilt with the thought that she need never lay eyes on him again.

Five years after the mortifying wedding night that destroyed all her romantic fantasies, Rose is fed up with hearing second - and third - hand reports of Gil's philandering ways. She is no longer the shy, homely girl he left behind, but a strong, confident woman who knows how to run an estate. And knows what she wants - her husband, back in their marriage bed.

Gil doesn't recognize the bold, flirtatious woman he meets at a ball, with or without her mask. Yet he is bewitched and besotted, and their night together is the most passionate he has ever known. But when he confesses his sins to the beautiful stranger, the truth rips open the old wounds of their blighted history. Threatening any hope of a future together.

Contains mature themes.

Beat me again it's my fault!!

I kept reading hoping . . praying . . believing that at some point Rose would wake up and smell the coffee and smack her jerk husband in the face, but to know avail! Instead she berates herself for what . . .seducing her own husband! Terrible, terrible lessons in this book!

An Excellent book

Would you consider the audio edition of Unforgivable to be better than the print version?

I think this book would be great in any format. It is very much like a Mary Balaug novel. It has an h/h that don't just fall into bed/love because both are beautiful. They have a very rough start to their relationship and then grow together. You understand why the fall in love and feel the complexity of those emotions.

Who was your favorite character and why?

I really liked Rose. She was smart and did not make a lot of mistakes or went against her intelligence just to make the plot move in a certain way ( like so many authors that write smart women that keep doing stupid things). Rose was authentic to her character and behaved with logic, strength and passion.

Which character – as performed by Lucy Rayner – was your favorite?

The narrator did a great job with the different characters. I could hear when characters changed, because she had a subtle difference for every one. I think she did a very good djob.

Did you have an extreme reaction to this book? Did it make you laugh or cry?

I could feel the anguish of the characters and their pain. It was then so wonderful to feel them falling in love and coming to appreciate each other. This is what romance should be...but lately is not . This book doesn't depend on sex scenes to convey the emotions. it is complex, from them hating each other to friendship to love. The character development was fantastic! And the sex scenes are integrated so they have meaning and move the story forward.

Any additional comments?

I can't wait to read more from this author. She has a great feel for both the anxiety, insecurity and flaws found in both a male and female character, so the development is exciting to read. I wish there were more books available from her, but hopefully in the future. I'll be looking for more like this one.

Not what I was expecting

The story is good, but is very melodramatic.

I was expecting a light hearted romantic comedy, and while there were moments it is not a comedy.

The characters are real, flawed and relatable. The plotline flows beautifully with no jarring plot holes.

Would I listen to it again? Yes but not for awhile

The one complaint I have is that there is no epilogue, while it is a happy ending, it is a bit unsatisfying that we don't get to see their life after they get together at the very end.

Heartless Hero Never redeems himself.

I kept praying that this guy would get a clue. He never even asked about her feelings or took into account that it was not all about him. His dad lost his estate and he blames the man willing to give it back to him if he would just marry his daughter. He took it out on his 17 year old just off of deaths door new bride. He never even asked her anything about getting married to him before going through with the arrangement. Yet only took into account how it would look if he left her too soon after the wedding. Literally fucked her like she was nothing. Not even being careful of her virginity and the pain he caused her. Just got her a bit wet and ripped her open to get the deed done. Then got up and left. When she tried again he made it known she meant nothing to him and he was just doing the duty. She had every right not to want to be treated like that. So he leaves??? It is 5 years later and he never has anything to do with her. She is out in the country and he is in town screwing anything that looks pretty. She comes to town hoping to talk him into more, but this ass doesn't even recognize the girl he married for money, screwed for proof and then dumped in his isolated country home for 5 years. Now? Well now it is different because she is pretty enough??? Now she is worth it, because he doesn't know she is his wife. She gets the truth from him after she let's him use her body. He never told his wife what his problem was, but he tells a complete stranger why he hates his wife. She leaves before he wakes. He goes searching for her, but she is gone. Until she writes that she is pregnant and he thinks his wife took a lover and wanted to punish her. He can't wait to do that and sets out that day to go punish his faithless wife. Then when he gets there he realizes who she is and blames her.... wtf??? He even tried to say the kid isn't his. Then he changes his mind and brings her back to the city to put on a show that they reconciled to prove his heir is his. He let's the Ton abuse with his filandering ways. He is never there for her! He never protects her! Even from the gossip he himself helped spread. He keeps saying he didn't mean to hurt her? He wasn't even thinking about her! Until he was attracted to her she was just the caretaker of his country estate that he forgot about. Even then he was never there for her. You call this a romance? I call this a story of a resilient doormat that never gets treated like the diamond she really is. She never never even makes him work for it. She just keeps forgiving. He never even proves he is a changed man or that he even really cares. He just says it and expects her believe him and she does. I hate this crap when people call this a love story. Flawed my ass!!! He is a selfish asshole and nothing this author wrote made me believe he was going to be good for her then or in the future. Narration was good with recognizable character changes. I guess this story is good for anyone who likes to be walked all over or willing to save ex inmates who promise they will never reoffend, but never prove they are truly remorseful. No epilogue was included and it left it hanging like that.

Good story, AWFUL reader. Buy the book instead

The cadence of the reader’s voice was very distracting. She started each and every sentence with a high pitch and ended in a very low pitch. I listen to audible all the time. I have never had a big problem with any of the readers until now. She made the lead character sound whiny and petulant simply the way she read the story. It was very off-putting. Not enjoyable to listen to.

Missing this one would be unforgivable.

Ok, it was occasionally a tiny bitty bit slow. And once or twice I didn’t love love love the narrative. But all in all a VERY good book! A very good narrative and a excellent, totally hot, steaminess.

Wait for it, wait for it and SLAM!

The story looks long however, it’s not repeating or dragging. It’s a story of ones unwanted marriage and another’s longing to be loved. Very enjoyable read.

Such romanticism and couldn’t stop listening

I love a historical romance now and then and this fits my mood perfectly. It has the charm of an innocent young girl who was married to an Earl who did not want to be married...she grew strong, stood up for herself and was more forgiving in every way....simply beautifully written

A Wonderful complex story !!!!

I read this book first with kindle. Loved the author's character development and story flow. Once I started reading i couldn't put it down. This seldom happens for me.
Then I tried the sample audio version. Completely turned off with it. Months later,(liking the book so much) I read it again. This time I purchased the Audible version. SO GLAD I DID ! It was wonderful. They could not have picked a worst section to use as a sample. Ended up loving the narrator. Right up there with Mary Jane Wells and Justine Eyre.
Also the cover for the book and Audible are beautiful.
