Story
The benefits of restrictive diets like paleo and keto have been touted for more than a decade, but as renowned gastroenterologist Dr. Will Bulsiewicz, or "Dr. B", illuminates in this groundbreaking audiobook, the explosion of studies on the microbiome makes it abundantly clear that elimination diets are in fact hazardous to our health. What studies clearly now show - and what Dr. B preaches with his patients - is that gut health is the key to boosting our metabolism, balancing our hormones, and taming the inflammation that causes a host of diseases.

From tuberculosis to bird flu and HIV to coronavirus, these infectious diseases share a common origin story: human interaction with animals. Otherwise known as zoonotic diseases for their passage from animals to humans, these pathogens - both preexisting ones and those newly identified - emerge and reemerge throughout history, sparking epidemics and pandemics that have resulted in millions of deaths around the world. How did these diseases come about? And what - if anything - can we do to stop them and their fatal march into our countries, our homes and our bodies?

By now, the low-carb diet's refrain is a familiar one: "Bread is bad for you. Fat doesn't matter. Carbs are the real reason you can't lose weight. In The Low-Carb Fraud, longtime leader in the nutritional science field T. Colin Campbell outlines where and how the low-carb proponents get it wrong: Where the belief came from that carbohydrates are bad and why it persists despite all the evidence to the contrary. The foods we misleadingly refer to as "carbs" aren't all created equal, and treating them that way has major consequences for our nutritional well-being.

Summary
National best seller
Fight cancer, diabetes, heart disease, weight gain, and even the aging process itself with one simple, scientifically proven plan to reverse disease - as well as prevent and reduce symptoms - from the world-renowned pioneer of lifestyle medicine.
Dean Ornish, MD, has directed revolutionary research proving, for the first time, that lifestyle changes can often reverse - undo! - the progression of many of the most common and costly chronic diseases and even begin reversing aging at a cellular level.
Medicare and many insurance companies now cover Dr. Ornish’s lifestyle medicine program for reversing chronic disease because it consistently achieves bigger changes in lifestyle, better clinical outcomes, larger cost savings, and greater adherence than have ever been reported - based on 40 years of research published in the leading peer-reviewed medical and scientific journals.
Now, in this landmark audiobook, he and Anne Ornish present a simple yet powerful new unifying theory explaining why these same lifestyle changes can reverse so many different chronic diseases and how quickly these benefits occur. They describe what it is, why it works, and how you can do it:
- Eat well: a whole foods, plant-based diet naturally low in fat and sugar and high in flavor. The “Ornish diet” has been rated “#1 for Heart Health” by U.S. News & World Report every year from 2011 to 2017.
- Move more: moderate exercise such as walking
- Stress less: including meditation and gentle yoga practices
- Love more: how love and intimacy transform loneliness into healing
With 70 recipes, easy-to-follow meal plans, tips for stocking your kitchen and eating out, recommended exercises, stress-reduction advice, and inspiring patient stories of life-transforming benefits - for example, several people improved so much after only nine weeks that they were able to avoid a heart transplant - Undo It! empowers listeners with new hope and new choices.
“The Ornishes’ work is elegant and simple and deserving of a Nobel Prize, since it can change the world!” (Richard Carmona, MD, MPH, FACS, 17th Surgeon General of the United States)
“If you want to see what medicine will be like ten years from now, read this book today.” (Rita F. Redberg, MD, editor in chief, JAMA Internal Medicine)
“This is one of the most important books on health ever written.” (John Mackey, CEO, Whole Foods Market)

Excellent read
I have read many books on the subject of a Whole Plant Based Diet by Barnard, McGregor, Popper, Ferman and McDougal and none of them come close to the Ornishes book, I truly place this up there with the teachings and science of Dr's Esseylstyn and Colin T Campbell.
Well read by the husband and wife (OK a little "flowery" at some points) but at least they have botherd like Esselstyn and Campbell to carry out their own research to support their belifs in a better future for all. For me it has all been about lifestyle change to promote longevity and this is a great bible to live by, weight loss to me was a side effect and not my aim (84.1 > 65kg).
Take your time absorb the facts and move forward to a better life without starving yourself to get there 😉👍

Beautiful.
This really is a beautiful piece of work with the cherry on the top being that Dean Ornish himself narrates thé book.
It combines so so much of his work condensed into a sensible and easy to listen to book, yet it feels that it contains so much more content.
This is the very best calibre of lifestyle medicine with a balance of statistics (with referenced studies) and provides both the science and the implementation.
It’s superb, inspiring and intellectual work from one of the best examples of humanity.
Thank you Dr Ornish, and your wife for taking the time to create this logical, emotional and compassionate book.

Hugely disappointing
I couldn't finish it , only got to chapter 6. I found absolutely nothing new in this book , it's the same stock in trade diet touted by every hippy run health food shop ever and some of the advice is downright stupid ( such as make a tit of yourself in restaurants and on being told that mothers who feel stressed are stressed and mothers who don't, aren't - well no shit sherlock..... so the advice there was ? Dont feel stressed ! What ??? ) Put all that alongside the most dreary voices I've ever heard , I couldn't take any more.

Surprisingly awful
This audiobook was pure torture. If you have any inclination of reading it, save your ears and your money by checking it out of the library. Bad stuff includes:
1. I was not aware when I sampled the book that half of the book is read by Anne Ornish, and that gal is painful to listen to. Slow talking and condescending too sweet just overall annoying. She talks to the reader like a small child. “Why do you eat? When do you eat? Do you really need a hug?” I skipped over nearly every section she wrote. Also, it’s just disruptive to the flow of the book to have narrators switch throughout.
2. Dean’s sections were too complex. And I say that as someone with a master’s degree in a research field. They were just hard to follow and not captivating. Conversely, Anne’s sections were way dumbed down. The real life application of the content was too entry level to be either interesting or helpful. This book missed the mark completely by reaching these two extremes.
3. The target audience appears to be people who struggle with emotional eating. I was not aware that was the overall thrust of the book. I was looking for health and nutrition education that would inspire Mel to implement new healthy practices. Instead the advice was stuff like eat at a table instead of in a car. A whole book of that stuff. It was painful.
I recognize Dr Ornish is a pioneer in his field and agree with his recommendations. However, I found this book utterly useless, a painful read as an audiobook and one of the few I’ve purchased (I listen to about 1 book a week) for which I truly wanted my money back.
Too bad. Just check it out from the library to capture the high level points.

Hard to get through
I follow a WFPB diet and read and listen to many of the experts. This book was poorly written. Too much old information and the audible version was horribly read. No energy, no passion, monotone. The only person more boring to listen to than Dean Ornish is his cowriter. They may be brilliant scientists but they should hire a better ghost writer and reader.

Although the cited research was interesting and informative, this work presented a dearth of actionable items. An interesting read, but low-impact as a worthwhile self-help tool. Better as a book than audiobook
I like the content of this audiobook however I felt this information isn’t new. Eat a plant based diet and take care of yourself.
However there is a lot of background information that proves why eating plant based diet is better for you.
Since it has a lot of technical info, which I liked, I felt it would be easier to read than listen to. They reference info in the pdf but it’s not in chronological with the chapters and that makes it hard to follow.
