Great Book.

When you try to describe the effects of racism on a person's mental health to someone who is not black, you could run into some difficulties. How other people see you and the initial impression you receive when you go into a room where you are the only black person there is what we refer to as "white privilege." You are struggling with the fight to be accepted, and many see you as a problematic individual just because of the colour of your skin. Because of the nature of my job as a delivery driver, I am often exposed to settings with a disproportionately high number of white people. Because of this, I have developed the ability to accept the fact that I am sometimes seen as a criminal and sometimes treated in this manner. individuals watching me through their open windows in the hope that I will commit a crime that they can record on video. When people see that I am not what they assumed I was, they become frustrated and stop filming me. This is because, in their minds, every black person is a criminal or is destined to become a criminal at some point. I occasionally notice people recording me in these situations. This is the suffering that comes with being black. A white criminal is tolerated by society, and no one will even consider the possibility that a white person has the propensity to commit a crime. People will look the other way when they see a white person who is likely to do something wrong, and they will focus their attention instead on an innocent black person. That is the world we live in.
Because it contributes to an understanding of the subject matter, everyone should read this book. A dissection of internalised racism that will assist in elucidating the significance of the experiences that are unique to black people. How racism operates and strategies for overcoming it are discussed. In addition, it takes a more in-depth look at racism in all facets of your social life, from discrimination in your relationships to the process of coming to terms with your own identity, in order to combat black trauma.

Inspiring

This was without a doubt an interesting listen, providing background information on the origins of black trauma and how this presents itself in our modern society. I love that this book addresses generations of traumatic events that have repercussions to this day and continue to affects us deeply. 'Understanding Black Trauma' offers a variety of tools and avenues to stop internalizing racism, find some inner peace, and cope healthily with the constant impacts of this heavy and destructive phenomenon. It is a book with a strong message of hope that I can only highly recommend.

Impactful!

As a black woman, I am really impacted by this book. As I continued to listen to the audiobook I became emotional, having witnessed some of the unfortunate events shared and knowing that every bit of the text is true; sad but true. This book relays historical events which took place to the detriment of black people–information that makes well-thinking people shiver in disbelief. A sad account, but a true recount.

Thankfully, the book also offers solutions presenting ideas on how to diagnose racial trauma and deal with racism in its many forms. The book also shares several stages on how to rediscover your inner self. All in all, it lists several strategies to understand and overcome trauma whether experienced or observed.

It is difficult for me to write this review but I do so hoping that many will purchase and listen to this audiobook and enlighten themselves about negative attitudes and injustices in our world and how to make a difference.

A deeper understanding!

This book gives a lot of insight on black trauma. It delivers impactful and eye-opening information, and helps black people overcome the challenges they are facing. The author's 11 steps are powerful to help people become mentally strong in dealing with such trauma. If you're not black, then this will also provide you with a greater understanding on what black people are dealing with regards to racism. Truly a wonderful book!

Eye-Opening

I work in HR and am trying to build a diversity & inclusion program at my company. So when I came across this book, I was very intrigued - it's incredibly powerful and insightful! It gave great insight into black trauma and what it looks like in today's society. It is well written and done in a way that puts the readers in the shoes of individuals dealing with racism and its associated trauma. The perspective it can give someone who isn't black is invaluable, and I highly recommend this book to everyone!

Helpful book

It’s true that there have been racial events against black people; but it exists in other ethnicities as well, like Hispanics and Asians. The same issues happen in all ethnicities. But, we must concentrate on the positive and not continue lingering on the bad or the past, like the times of slavery, for example. We need to move on or you will be stuck forever. You can’t suffer endlessly for the slavery of the past. It's just not healthy. For example, Puerto Ricans experienced similar issues many, many years ago. Lots of Puerto Ricans were slaughtered at that time. But they don’t linger around what happened in the past, but continue to be better every day without letting the past mark their future. For this reason, you hardly hear them mentioning that massacre. We all need to do the same. Racism is a common problem. But this book will especially help the black community heal that past. The author is correct when she says: to seek a positive racial identity! that’s spot on! If you feel you are experiencing racial trauma, this book will help you out, for sure.
