I’ve been watching Chinese dramas for over eight years, and while they’ve introduced me to bits and pieces of Chinese mythology, I realized there was so much I didn’t fully understand. This book helped connect those dots.
What I liked most is that it doesn’t assume you already know anything. It explains the stories, the gods, the legendary heroes, and the symbolism in a way that’s easy to follow without oversimplifying everything. I also appreciated how it connects many of the myths to Chinese culture and history, which gave me a deeper appreciation for themes and references I’d seen in so many C-dramas over the years. It gave me a whole new perspective on stories and characters I’ve been enjoying for years, and now I find myself noticing references I would have completely missed before.

This audiobook is about real Chinese lore. It tells the story of creation, where the giant Pangu swings a huge axe to divide the forces of yin and yang. He holds up the sky for eighteen thousand years. After that, his dying body transforms into the earth's rivers, mountains, and soil. The book uncovers the unique behaviors of Chinese dragons. They rule rivers and control the weather, not like Western monsters who hoard gold. The supernatural encounters include hopping Chinese vampires, known as Jiangshi, that move by jumping to drain a person's life force. Localized tree spirits that hide inside ancient, sacred trunks.

It's a chaotic journey of the rebellious Monkey King. His pursuit of immortality and erasing his own name from the Book of Life and Death. After that, he starts a supernatural war against the entire heavenly court. This links directly to philosophical parables like the Wolf of Zhongshan. This fable follows a travelling scholar who saves a starving wolf from hunters by hiding it in a bag, only for it to escape. Showing that true gratitude requires letting the wolf eat him, sparking a dangerous debate on moral responsibility.
