About this listen

INSTANT NEW YORK TIMES BESTSELLER

Passionately read by the author, Emmanuel Acho.

‘An absolute must-read . . . Emmanuel Acho dives into important subjects like cultural appropriation and white privilege, urging you to find a way to join in the fight against racism’ – Cosmopolitan

An urgent primer on race and racism, from Emmanuel Acho, an American Football Legend and host of the viral hit video series Uncomfortable Conversations with a Black Man.

In Uncomfortable Conversations with a Black Man, Acho takes on all the questions, large and small, insensitive and taboo, many white people are afraid to ask – yet which everyone needs the answers to, now more than ever. With the same open-hearted generosity that has made his video series of the same name a phenomenon, Acho explains the vital core of such fraught concepts as white privilege, cultural appropriation and ‘reverse racism’.

In his own words, he provides a space of compassion and understanding in a discussion that can lack both. He asks only for the reader’s curiosity – but along the way, he will galvanize all of us to join the anti-racist fight.

‘I really love this’ – Jada Pinkett Smith
‘What Emmanuel Acho has to say is important’ – Matthew McConaughey

Critic reviews

I really love this . . . [it’s] deeply informative for those who need more clarity and understanding. Get educated with Uncomfortable Conversations with a Black Man (Jada Pinkett Smith)
What Emmanuel Acho has to say is important. It has made me think, and I hope that more people read this and that it will get them thinking. He answers the questions – the why of things – that will hopefully lead, in the future, to the how we move forward (Matthew McConaughey)
Emmanuel is a voice we need right now. I admire and appreciate the way he tackles complex issues with great empathy, care and introspection. He understands that every good conversation starts with listening, and I believe the work he is doing is critical (Roger Goodell, NFL Commissioner)
Emmanuel Acho pushes conversations that we need to have into the middle, when so many want them on the side. This book matters so much (Carl Lentz)

Very well written and even better delivered. Glad I listened rather than read it. Told in a way that was easy to follow, told without judgement and full of understanding. I will definitely take a lot of this on board, highly recommended!

Thoroughly enjoyed and very insightful!

As a British Pakistani man, there is a lot I can relate to with facing similar struggles, however I never understood the perspective from a black man. I have black friends but none of them could articulate their points of view like Emmanuel does with history and context, which is very important. I now have some sort of understanding of what it is like for a black man and I loved how he answered common questions from white people. He also speaks so well in his interviews/videos, so getting him to read his own book makes it that bit better. Let’s affect change from within our own homes out. That’s how we can become allies.

Perspective is important

I'm never trying to answer another question about race again. I will be directing everyone to this book. Fantastic.

Genius.

I can't even begin describe how much I've enjoyed listening to this book! Such a necessary discussion, beautifully explained. Relevant topics that needed to be dissected and that's exactly what Emmanuel did with this book, he broke down every single issue with brilliance and ease! What a delight!

Music to my ears!

I enjoyed, was educated, and was challenged as I have already been by Acho'ls videos.
Both what he says, but also the clear way he says it, makes for easy understanding. - and understanding is surely the theme he conveys to each person who experiences his ideas - we are challenged to listen, to take in, and to pass on.

Utterly Delightful - and very practical too
