Summary

From the founder and activist behind one of the largest movements of the 21st century, the Me Too movement, Tarana Burke debuts a powerful memoir about her own journey to saying those two simple yet infinitely powerful words and how she brought empathy back to an entire generation.

Tarana didn't always have the courage to say me too. As a child, she reeled from her sexual assault, believing she was responsible. Unable to confess what she thought of as her own sins for fear of shattering her family, her soul split in two. One side was the bright, intellectually curious third generation Bronxite steeped in Black literature and power, and the other was the bad, shame-ridden girl who thought of herself as a vile rule breaker, not of a victim. She tucked one away, hidden behind a wall of pain and anger, which seemed to work...until it didn't.

Tarana fought to reunite her fractured soul, through organising, pursuing justice and finding community. In her debut memoir, she shares her extensive work supporting and empowering Black and Brown girls, and the devastating realisation that to truly help these girls she needed to help that scared, ashamed child still in her soul. Tarana has found that we can only offer empathy to others if we first offer it to ourselves.

Unbound is the story of an inimitable woman's inner strength and perseverance, all in pursuit of bringing healing to her community and the world around her, but it is also a story of possibility, of empathy, of power and of the leader we all have inside ourselves. In sharing her path toward healing and saying me too, Tarana reaches out a hand to help us all on our own journeys.

Amazing!

I love reading but I've only ever listened to a few audible books and I never finish them. I listened to this from start to finish and finished it within a few days. Tarana Burke writes from the heart and I felt every word. I had tears in my eyes at many points in the story. How amazing that someone can endure so much but still come out fighting not just for herself but for all women who have gone through what she went through. When you listen to this you start to reflect on all the bad in the world and wonder how people can be so cruel. But then you pause take a breath and realise that there are beautiful people too and Tarana Burke is one of them. What a courageous and talented woman.

Fantastic book

Where to start…not much I write could do this book justice. It feels so important to have Tarana’s personal story out in the world. As a survivor myself, with more than just a few parallels, this resonated profoundly but I think everyone will come away richer for knowing it and not just survivors. It’s unflinching and unwavering and bold. It’s courageous, honest and dripping with empathy. Thank you Tarana xx

What a lady

Thank you Tarana for sharing your life.

You are courageous to allow us in and know your pain. You however have not let that mar the person you are now.

What a wonderful woman you are.

I hope that the many women who need to read this will, and find their own solace.

Not enough superlatives to praise this book and performance

I don’t listen to many audiobooks because I rarely enjoy the narration. However, Tarana delivers her own words with such colour, power and humanity, I was utterly gripped, deeply moved and whole heartedly inspired. It’s such an important book for the world to read, my God what a woman and what a story, and such an incredible gift to hear her reading it herself. I just can’t recommend it enough.

Phenomenal!!!

I couldn't stop listening to it! It was worth every second. Thank you Tarana.
I felt an array of emotions - happiness, anger, hope, shock, surprise, compassion...
all ingredients of a well written book.
It's an emotional story that I could totally relate to.
Tarana doesn't hold back in sharing about her experiences, the good, the bad, and ugly. Her candidness and courage are very refreshing. I feel emboldened to share my story too as a survivor. It's definitely going to stay in my library for a very, very, very long time.
In summary, it's a must read!

Well articulated autobiography. Interesting to hear about the building of the movement and what led to its development.

Burke is very brave, as everyone who finds the strength to share their story is. She writes in a way that is so open that it feels as though we are right there experiencing it all with her. She stands before us raw and exposed.
As well as the bravery of sharing her own abuses, I was really impressed with Burke sharing her own mistakes. To openly and honestly admit that you f'd up, in some pretty huge ways! (eg with Heaven) (and I'm not judging - it's obviously completely understandable) but I think it must have taken a huge amount of courage to say to the world.

And then she not only wrote out her words but spoke them too. I'm glad she did her own narration as I don't think anyone else could have done it justice.

I had thought there'd be more info on the works done and more on the black perspective, but that's not at all a fault with the book but with my own expectations from not fully reading the synopsis.

Speechless…

So grateful to have cross paths with this book. This is a story of redemption, forgiveness, tragedy turned into strength not just for the author Tarana Burke, but to every single person the #MeToo movement has ever touched. I could’ve easily said I’ve heard this story before hundreds of times, however, Tarana’s voice resonated in my mind and soul at another level. The way she expresses her grief and her pain is so unique you instantly connect with her.

I was so surprised a couple of things caught my attention so bad that I had to rewind some of the chapters from the very beginning: the first thing that blew my mind was that even though (as many of us) she was warned by her mother about the wrongness on being touched in your intimate parts (she was sexually abused since she was 7 years old), she ended up not saying a word because the way her mother warned her made Tarana think that SHE was the one had broken a rule! (she later corrects this with her own daughter as she understood the mistake her mom made).

The second thing that really got into me was that as she had always looked at her own self as a fighter (not a victim), she couldn’t tell domestic violence until she got pregnant with her daughter Kaia. The very moment she understood she couldn’t physically fight back, was the moment she decided to leave.

The other thing that I find extremely important in her book is the acknowledgement of intersectionality that most of the feminist books I’ve read (so far) don’t acknowledge. She’s a black woman fighting for her rights as a woman AND as part of the black population (two things that intersect with one another).

Tarana Burke’s contribution to modern feminist wave with the #MeToo movement since it got viral in 2017 is outstanding. She’s determined, encouraging and real life activist for women’s rights. Beautiful book (I personally adored her performance in the audiobook).
