About this listen

The Scribe Award-winning adaptation of the classic Ultraman series from the 1960s—experience this bold take on Earth's iconic defender!

Pursuing a fugitive space monster, a Being of Light enters Earth's atmosphere. Accidentally colliding with a patrolling jet, piloted by Science Patrol Agent Shin Hayata, the Being merges with the pilot to save his life and vows to defend the Earth.

Now whenever the planet is threatened by alien invaders, terrifying monsters or any threat beyond the capabilities of humanity, Shin Hayata transforms into the towering Ultraman to restore peace and save the day.

Dive into the action-packed adventure as told by Hugo, Clarke, and Scribe Award-winning author Pat Cadigan.

I don’t know which impresses me more; the way the indestructible Pat Cardigan has managed to cram a whole season’s worth of TV episodes into a single book without sacrificing any of the story or characterisation, or the brilliant reading by narrator Derek Shoales. Shoales gives every character - including the aliens! - a unique voice (vital for an ensemble piece like this), and infuses the monster fight scenes with drama.

Yes, it’s not Shakespeare, but when you buy the novelisation of a Japanese Tokusatsu series, you know what you’re getting. Cardigan subtly updates the story to a near future setting, while keeping faith with the original TV story. It’s great fun, and a terrific introduction to the Ultraman universe for anyone dipping their toes into the adventures of everyone’s favourite denizens of the Land of Light!

Here’s hoping for many more of these great adaptations!

Dynamite! A great introduction to Japan’s biggest superhero!
