About this listen

JONAS

10K if I sleep with this guy's brother.

His twin brother, Ryan Hawthorne.

I've never messed around with a guy, but for that much money, I'll figure it out.

A descendant of American royalty, Ryan was born into money, status, and privilege. He spent his life in his family's cushy mansion while my family struggled to get by.

Shortly after we meet, I discover an important detail about why his twin hired me for this gig.

I'm the spitting image of someone from Ryan's past, someone he loved deeply.

I also discover that, despite my preconceptions, there's more to Ryan than some snotty rich guy with the world at his fingertips.

He intrigues me, and after the hottest night of my life, I realize something about myself.

Something he's brought out of me.

Now his brother has a new offer on the table.

But it means participating in a disturbing mind game with one object: screw with Ryan's head.

I have to do this, but what's happening between us isn't a game.

The spark of that first night becomes a raging wildfire, and I allow the lines between real and fake to blur, losing myself in a chaotic mix of blood, lust, secrets,

and lies, all tying back to this man from Ryan's past.

The man I remind him of.

There's a connection between us, yes. But what hope is there for a future with Ryan when his brother's twisted rivalry keeps him trapped in the past?

This story was mentally brutal from start to finish. I listened to it in one sitting. Couldn’t put it down. The characters were well written and the story was heartbreaking with many twists. Perfect narration.

Mentally brutal but brilliant

Twisted Rivalry had promise, but unfortunately, it reads more like a parody of a V.C. Andrews novel—without the gothic atmosphere or emotional depth. The story tackles several dark and weighty themes, but they often feel like shock value rather than meaningful exploration.

The central romance leans heavily on physical attraction, with little emotional grounding. The chemistry between the leads never quite takes hold, and their character development feels rushed, especially given the intensity of what they’re meant to be experiencing.

There’s a lot of telling rather than showing, and the intimate scenes quickly become repetitive, losing their impact. What could have been a slow-burn exploration of identity, trauma, and emotional connection instead feels more like a series of melodramatic encounters strung together with minimal nuance.

The antagonist is so over-the-top in their villainy that it undercuts the seriousness of the themes at play. I kept hoping the story would redeem itself or offer some depth in its final act, but the plot remained frustratingly shallow and predictable.

Ultimately, this was a disappointing read for me—ambitious in premise, but lacking the sensitivity, craft, or atmosphere to handle its darker elements meaningfully.

Ambitious but Emotionally Shallow
