About this listen

Three muffled thuds ring from the partially filled grave of the newly wed girl.

Only the verger hears them and he dismisses the noise as his imagination. But over the next few days others also hear faint sounds.

An exhumation order is granted. Reporter Kate Hemingway sneaks into the small suburban churchyard when the coffin is opened, and the scene she witnesses is so horrific she can never forget it. As she starts work on the story, Kate finds herself caught up in a sinister and macabre cover-up.

At the centre is a respected anaesthetist who has a secret obsession. He believes people can exist outside their bodies and that if he can prove it he will provide the answer to the question that has haunted mankind through the ages: is there life after death?

Nothing - and no one - is going to stand in the way of his driving ambition . . .

'Peter James is one of the best crime writers in the business.' Karin Slaughter

'Well-researched, chillingly executed and eminently readable.' Sunday Times

The usual from this author, interesting story but over explanations ruin it. Some chapters are just filled with nothing but what everything looks like, smells like, feels like gets very boring. I did like the use of two voices to tell both sides and felt this saved it at points.

Interesting story

The premise of this book is fascinating and horrific - could a body really have been buried alive? This ne feels a little dated now but is still an interesting listen. I liked the dual timeline but at times the book felt a little sluggish. It's a bit spooky and I did enjoy the parnormal elements, and the medical stuff seemed well researched.

Disappointing

A fantastical and improbable story but nevertheless a highly enjoyable page turner. Peter James creates great stories and tells them very well. He has a knack of creating lead characters that one can engage with and this drives a sense of involvement with the plot. I found the female narrator very good indeed. The male narrator’s rather fast and breathy style was somewhat off putting although unlike other listeners it did not significantly spoil my enjoyment. I thoroughly enjoyed this one and found it hard to put down. The ideal companion on several long car journeys!

Thoroughly enjoyed it

enjoyable story line but found the male narrators voice rather annoying after a while. almost clipped with a rhythm!

Not as good as I'd hoped

Well narrated and gripping enough to keep me engaged throughout. He’s always good. This one was no different. Anyone ck planning about the narration didn’t listen for more than a little while maybe as there are a few narrators but to me the Narration was excellent

Another great Peter James classic
