About this listen

Was it wrong to tell Beau’s mother he’s my boyfriend? Yes. Would I do it again? In a heartbeat.

The smokin’-hot fireman isn’t exactly in the closet, but he’s been keeping things quiet for years. I don’t do quiet.

All the guys in Hell’s Ankhor know I have to be true to myself. That’s why they call me Tru.

Beau and I are nothing alike. Doesn’t matter. The attraction between me and the fire chief is hot enough to burn.

But there’s danger in town, too much for us to get hung up on each other.

Yeah, too late for that.

Do I want to kill Tru for lying to my mom? A little. But the look on her face was worth the fallout.

The easy-going biker is nothing like me. He’s impulsive. Brash. Happy.

I’ve never dated another guy before, and I should probably walk away.

Too bad I can’t.

When we get wrapped up in an arsonist’s plot, I have to wonder if Tru wants me or an open flame.

My doubts are nearly enough to smother any ember of love, but I need to be stronger than that. Can we still make things work after all the flames are doused?

Tru has bad boys, bikers, and a fire chief finally ready to step all the way out of the closet and into the arms of his not-so-fake boyfriend.

I really enjoyed this story that starts with a fake relationship/date to a wedding, followed by a spark of connection and some real hot chemistry. The romance centers around the fire chief who is out, but doesn't insist that his mother acknowledge and respect his status or his occupation, and a member of the former Liberty Crew motorcycle club. To add to the relationship drama, there is also an arsonist on the loose, and he's escalating. Will they find the arsonist before anyone gets seriously hurt or will their love go down among flames of doubt and suspicion? I really liked the focus of the story being wider than the motorcycle clubs. The story still ties in with the preceding books, but it can be enjoyed as a stand alone. I am really looking forward to Joker's story on audiobook.

The narration was good, flowed smoothly, and really brought all the characters to life.

For a story that started off so fun and lighthearted, it sure did get scary towards the end. I was expecting the main storyline to be about how Tru and Beau's fake relationship turned into something real, but this book was so much more than that. Sure, the fake boyfriends situation was a big deal in the first few chapters, but where Tru and Beau really won me over was in the aftermath. These men were so much softer and sweeter than I'd anticipated, and I loved watching them carve out time for each other despite their busy schedules. Tru and Beau had insanely hot chemistry, and even though they didn't have much time together, the time they did get was spent thoroughly exploring each other's bodies. When the action picked up and things started to get strained between Beau and Tru, I have to admit that I was firmly on Tru's side. I find it harder to relate to guys who refuse to communicate openly, and Beau definitely fell into that trap over and over again. As the situation with the mysterious arsonist escalated, I was equal parts captivated and terrified to see just how bad the fires would get. These authors nailed the pacing of this storyline, giving me next to no clues about who the arsonist was until the climax of the story. Despite several minutes of increasing panic, this story did, thankfully, come to a satisfying conclusion. Beau and Tru's reconcilliation was everything I'd been waiting for, and their sweet love-making soothed any tension remaining between them. David Allen Vargo provided excellent narration to bring these men to life, and I love how each character had their own unique voice that expressed their personality.

Sweet, sexy, and surprisingly suspenseful

Going along with the biker club theme, I really found myself involved in this story. I enjoyed that Beau wasn't part of the club, but the chief at the firehouse. I also found it interesting that he was out, but didn't live like it, which cast a shadow over parts of the relationship. Overall, it just really worked for me. A great listen.

We’re up to number 7 now in this series and I started to wonder if it would begin to run out of steam. Well, not yet it seems because this story of Tru and Beau is another good one. They have great chemistry and their relationship develops as part of an intriguing arsonist story line. This is a well written story with complex characters, a compelling story arc, and some really good romance (not the light and fluffy kind) threaded through it all.

In terms of narration, David Allen Vargo gives a solid performance. His voice fits with the tenor of the book and the series because it has a richness and depth to it that is the appropriate counterpoint to the characters and the story. He created two distinct voices and consistently delivered them. His diction is excellent and he is able to impart the right emotion behind the words, although at times, the delivery seemed a bit overdone, like he was trying too hard. Overall, though, I recommend this book and the series.

Tru first spotted Beau when the clubs bakery had been on fire and then more often during the investigation that followed. They are attracted to each other but Beau doesn't date and his family dont accept his sexuality. Everything starts to change when Tru attends a wedding. David Allen Vargo did a great selection of voices in his narration.
