About this listen
Troy Deeney is best known as Watford FC's captain and a thorn in Arsenal's side. But behind the successful and gritty football persona is a remarkable story of resilience.
In this brutally honest and inspirational memoir, Troy shares what it was like to grow up on Europe's largest council estate, where his mum worked three jobs and his father, a notorious drug dealer, was frequently in and out of prison.
He shares stories of self-sabotage, from simply not turning up to Aston Villa's football trials as a teenager, playing while drunk to being imprisoned for affray at the height of his career.
But Troy never gave up, even when it meant playing professional football with an ankle tag. He went on to score 20+ goals in three successive seasons and became the club captain, an FA Cup finalist, promotion winner and Watford's record scorer. He also became an outspoken player advocate and - in an age of bland footballer interviews - is a sought-after voice on football and footballers today.
Engaging, endearing and insightful, this audiobook is where Troy comes to terms with his turbulent past.

if you're expecting another 'behind-the-scenes' kinda' book, you will be disappointed. this is no exposé and who said what, when where or why in dressing rooms or on training pitches. nowt like that
what it is, is a riveting journey of remembrance and coming-to-terms with the cards you're dealt. and thriving
personally, i would have preferred to listen to troy narrating his own story. his voice has a certain gravitas and a manner that makes you listen. like when he's on motd. the lad that does narrate sounds far too young and also sounds nowt like someone from troy's neighbourhood (if the narrator IS from troy's neighbourhood, forgive me...i'm from suffolk). troy to me has an almost hidden growl of passion and self-belief that the narrator just could never mimic
to summarise. don't buy if you're wanting the usual ex-footballer books. if you're genuinely interested in how a bloke who adapted and overcame his demons in a sporting arena, then this IS the one for you
humility & honesty

However, there are some very cringeworthy pronunciations of player names and football terms in this book. I really wish Troy had vetted the audio version. Its made me question the professionalism of the Narrator to not have done his research and has really put me off ever buying an audio book that is read by Oliver Cudbill again.
Fantastic story! Very Poor Narrator
