Summary

The Vermont Bureau of Investigation (VBI) has been pulled onto three cases at the same time; meanwhile, VBI head Joe Gunther has to take time off to care for his ailing mother.

Those cases are now in the hands of the individual investigators. Sammie Martens is assigned a murder case. The victim is a young woman, the roommate of the daughter of medical examiner Beverly Hillstrom. A recent transplant from Albany, New York, Sammie must find out what put a hit man on the trail of this seemingly innocent young woman.

Lester Spinney takes over a famous cold case, a double murder where a state trooper and a motorist were killed in an exchange of gunfire. Or so it has seemed for years. When Lester is told that the motorist’s fingerprints were planted on the gun he’s supposed to have fired, it opens the question - who really killed the state trooper?

Willy Kunkle’s case starts with a child’s discovery of three teeth on a railroad track, leading eventually to a case of possible sabotage against critical military equipment.

In cases that lead the team all over Vermont and nearby, Archer Mayor once again shows why his novels featuring Joe Gunther and the VBI team are among the finest in crime fiction today.

My favorite book in the series so far.

Great narration.
Loved the triple story line and getting better acquainted with the secondary characters.

such good stories. love the characters

I love all the Joe Gunther books, this one was especially good because of all of the different cases that were being worked on by the main characters. Not only were the case is interesting but the characters in their development through it we're awesome. the narrator continues to do a wonderful job in fact I can't work without having his voice in the background!

Great Job Samantha

Another great, although slightly different Joe Gunther book. As usual the VBI is on top of their game while trying to solve major crimes. I personally love the relationship between Joe, Beverly and Rachel. I look forward to hearing the next chapter in this series.

Best story to date!

The way this story starts at four different points then gradually comes together to intersect at another shows the skills of the writer. The ending was,for me, emotionally charged. I got those goosebumps that comes with that type of ending.
Tom, as usual, brought these beloved characters to life. I don’t think reading this book would have evoked the same level of emotions as listening to it. Thank you, Archer and Tom for an awesome story.

not bad

I'm glad taylorson is still the narrator. I didn't feel the other guy (William Dufries? I forget) captured the characterization.

Love it!

I did miss Joe and did wish he played a bigger part in this one, but I liked the 3 separate cases. I would recommend this author, these books and those read by Tom Taylorson

Enjoyable series

Good stories with enjoyable characters. Voices for the women are too masculine but otherwise okay.

Just WOW

This was a fantastic listen!! While Joe is away taking care of his sick mom the team proves they can do anything! Each of them working on a different case with Sammie being the boss they all did a great job! Lester solved a cops murder that everyone thought was already solved. He cleared an innocent man’s name and found the real killer. Willy and his usual cowboy antics started with 3 teeth a little girl found on the train tracks and a burned battery, but in the end found how a disgruntled employee of a factory that has a contract with the military was sabotaging the job. Sammie on the other hand helped solve the murder of Rachel’s new roommate, who was new to town and met Racheal when they “bumped” into each other. No one knew anything about the girl who was even using a fake name, but Sammie with the help of a pair of sunglasses solved the case! I love the Joe Gunther series and can’t wait to move onto the next one!
