About this listen

When a mysterious gem awakens a boy's unsuspected powers, he must master his new magic to defeat the otherworldly forces that threaten his world.

Ryan Aglecard figures he's no one special. He's just studying business, hanging out with his friends, and working at his uncle's coffee shop in a multispecies metropolis that never sleeps. But his normal life is overturned when a strange ruby found amid his father's old things ignites his abilities as a Spirit Keeper.

With the surprise discovery that he's one of the Awakened—a select few capable of wielding legendary magic—Ryan will have to work with his Knight Spirit, Maximus, to master a killer learning curve. He's leveling up at incredible speeds and gaining extraordinary rewards, but the dangers around him are multiplying every second.

When corruption infiltrates their world, Ryan and Maximus embark on a quest to unite three pieces of the Garden Golem Spirit Gaia, a long-lost protective entity. But they're soon pitted against the formidable force of other Awakeneds, halting their efforts to recover the fragments from those who are out to control all.

As the line between friends and foes begins to blur, Ryan and Maximus must confront a force devastating the city—and an even more insidious enemy starts to gather its strength . . .

The story is relatively well written, I don't know if this is the writter's first book or if they are young, but it was a bit immature in places. Apart from that it was a really enjoyed listen, a good fantasy story with minimal litrpg elements. The characters are mixed fantasy creatures - elf, ork, minotour etc - and human. World building is good, the levelling system is easy to understand and there isn't pages of stats being read out.
Narration is good with mostly different voices for all characters.
Enjoyable!
I am looking forward for the next book although it is not out until next year,
