About this listen

In the quiet village of Stonebridge, a woman's apparent suicide unearths dark secrets that point to murder. Join Inspector Jimmy Perez as he investigates the mysterious death of young teacher Anna Blackwell in this gripping Quick Read from Ann Cleeves' bestselling Shetland series.

Now a major BBC One drama, Shetland, starring Douglas Henshall.

When Anna Blackwell is found dead in her home, the police initially suspect suicide or a tragic accident. But in the tranquil country village of Stonebridge, nestled in the Scottish Borders, murders are unheard of.

Inspector Jimmy Perez, called in from far-away Shetland by his ex-wife Sarah, begins to investigate. Local gossip suggests that Anna was having an affair with Sarah's new husband, Tom. Could he have been involved in her death? As Sarah seeks proof of her husband's innocence, Perez uncovers a more sinister truth.

As a teacher, Anna loved children. Would she really take her own life, leaving her daughter without a mother? Her newfound happiness before her untimely demise leads Perez to suspect not suicide, but murder...

I have enjoyed most of Ann Cleeves' novels, and have noticed the way her writing and plotting has evolved over the years. Sadly, this effort is something of a regression. The plot was predictable And the behaviour of some of the main characters was quite unbelievable. This was nothing like the quality of her recent Shetland or Vera works. Disappointing.

Unimaginative

I usually enjoy Ann Cleeves books, especially the ones featuring Jimmy Perez, but this one was just such an unbelievable story. It was full of coincidences and the final denouement was, for me., just too contrived. Perhaps it would have been better had it been longer and more developed as it seemed to rush to a conclusion without enough substance.

Disappointing

It is set outside Peter's normal workplace, it is concluded in 2 days funding an unsuspected murderer

A short satisfactory investigation i

Absorbing storyline that is over far too quickly! A little Jimmy Perez is better than none.
