About this listen

Mount Kailas is the most sacred of the world’s mountains – holy to one fifth of humanity. Isolated beyond the central Himalayas, it is claimed by myth to be the source of the universe created from cosmic waters and the mind of Brahma. Its summit has never been scaled, but for centuries the mountain has been ritually circled by Hindu and Buddhist pilgrims.

Colin Thubron joins these pilgrims, after an arduous trek from Nepal, through the high passes of Tibet, to the magical lakes beneath the slopes of Kailas itself. His trek around the great mountain, revered by multitudinous others, awakes an inner landscape of solitude, love, grief, restoring precious fragments of his own origins.

Third Colin Thubron travel book I've listened to but not as good as In Siberia and Shadow of the Silk Road. I did enjoy the book but I had a few instances where my attention drifted.
This is as much a personal journey as it is a travel book. This book was OK but I would reccommend the other two first.

OK

Would you recommend this book to a friend? Why or why not?

I would recommend the book, but as a read not this Audible version. I struggled with the narration, which I felt lacked warmth or empathy, and seemed to take a rather detached and world-weary tone throughout. The main vision conjured up was of the narrator's raised eyebrow as he described another quaint Buddhist or Hindu belief, which is a shame because the heart of the book evocatively describes not only a completely alien way of belief, but also the author's own personal losses, as he makes this journey so associated with death and the supernatural. I found my often thoughts drifting off elsewhere, unusual when listening to audiobooks.

What did you like best about this story?

The insight into a culture and belief system so removed from my own

Would you be willing to try another one of Jonathan Keeble’s performances?

No, I don't think so, sadly

Could you see To a Mountain in Tibet being made into a movie or a TV series? Who would the stars be?

Really?

Fascinating but for me let down by the narration

This book beautifully describes the tranquility, hardship & beauty of travel in this part of the world. Colin Thubron's ability to capture detail is admirable.

An atmospheric journey into Tibet
