About this listen

Middle-aged. Divorced. Hormonally imbalanced. Then she got magic. Underestimate her. That'll be fun.

When Miri was a teen, her parents were murdered by magic assassins. Now her aggressively normal job as a law librarian is perfect for keeping her daughter safe—until her ride-or-die best friend goes missing after tangling with vampires.

To save her, Miri unleashes the rare and formidable shadow magic she’s kept hidden for years. It’s exhilarating, intoxicating—and totally dangerous.

Plunged into a hidden world of supernatural intrigue, Miriam’s reluctant ally is a grumpy French wolf shifter with the infuriating habit of disagreeing with her every move and the baffling drive to protect her, no matter the cost.

Too bad the tension between them is getting harder to ignore, because that was not on her To Do list.

But as threats multiply and secrets unravel, their spark could ignite even more trouble for them both. And if Miri isn’t careful, she’ll lose everyone she’s fought so hard to protect.

If you crave a smart, kickass heroine in her forties, and a slow-burn shifter romance with laugh-out-loud banter, this clever mix of urban fantasy and mystery will have you bingeing “just one more chapter.”

First of all, why couldn’t you find a Canadian to read this? The principal characters are Canadian, it’s set in Canada, but the reader has an American accent.
It was sold to me as hilarious. I found it mildly amusing in places, no more. The occasional chuckle was the best I managed.

Slightly amusing

Deborah Wilde books are usually fun and light read/listening, but I really struggled with this one. The story was so superficial. I had to repeat multiple parts, because my mind was drifting and I missed what was happening. The narrator was just....bad. I don't know why so many narrators are trying such a complex voice acting. I mean, Croix Provence was trying to impersonate male with French ascent. That is so difficult and unnecessary. And she failed. I found myself hoping the male character to stay in his animal shape so he doesn't have to speak.
A wasted credit.

Disappointing

Really liked the golem, an underused character in general. Enjoyed that the protaganist was a Jewish woman of a certain age with an ex that was both solid and amusing. The typical horror monsters abound but they were all a bit different than had been portrayed in other works thus making them more interesting. I would have appreciated better dialogue but that is just me.

Trying to break the cliches…..

Grating voice acting which I tried to put up with but such a poor plot. The character didn't seem to know who she was, switching between simpering damsel, and powerful educated woman. Very disappointing. Total waste of a credit.
