Summary

An unfiltered, unapologetic, hilarious, and sometimes obscene assemblage of tales from the down-and-dirty traveling comedy circuit

Doug Stanhope has been drunkenly stumbling down the back roads and dark alleys of stand-up comedy for over a quarter of a century, roads laden with dank bars, prostitutes, cheap drugs, farm animals, evil dwarfs, public nudity, menacing third-world police, psychotic breaks, sex offenders, and some understandable suicides. You know, just for levity.

While other comedians were seeking fame, Stanhope was seeking immediate gratification, dark spectacle, or sometimes just his pants. Not to say he hasn't rubbed elbows with fame. He's crashed its party, snorted its coke, and jumped into its pool naked, literally and often repeatedly - all while artfully dodging fame himself.

Doug spares no legally permissible detail, and his stories couldn't be told any other way. They're weird, uncomfortable, gross, disturbing, and fucking funny.

This Is Not Fame is by no means a story of overcoming a life of excess, immorality, and reckless buffoonery. It's an outright celebration of it. For Stanhope, the party goes on.

Funny when sober

Pure sober joy from start to finish! Normally I listen to Stanhope when I'm absolutely biccied, but this was great drive time entertainment shuttling back and forth to work!

Funny!

Rarely do I laugh out loud. The chapter on camping out at the Glasgow bus station made me swerve the car with tear filled laughter, on my journey back to, yes, you guessed it Glasgow - truly hilarious. I think I buck the fan trend, a Brit, female, semi non alcoholic, and reasonably well employed- there’s hope for you yet Doug - not that you care ...

Funny Funny Funny

Doug Stanhope - a marmite comedian. Either you love him or you find him a complete reprobate. What cannot be denied is his absolute searing honesty about his own life and the world. This is truly laugh out loud funny though often shocking and outrageous. Stanhope offers a unique perspective on the world that is engaging and interesting - whether you like it or not. Great performances all round .

A great ride through non fame

Digging up Mother was a heartfelt look back
This accompanying tome pulls no punches about everything that has gotten Doug to the present day.
The chapters about suicide made for difficult listening.
If you aren't one already, metamorphasise into a Killer Termite before it's too late.

So much better than the book.

Listening to Doug and associates tell this tale is so much better because there is much more with different characters chipping in all the time. It`s like listening to a gang of drunken friends sitting around chatting for an evening.

What a ride

I’m a big fan of Stanhope so I suppose that really helps, but the reading and support from his friends throughout this makes this such an enjoyable listen.

Great

The variation of the performance elevates what's a great book anyway to something even better.

Brilliant

Doug has lived a life worth writing about and I love how he went ahead with things that he knew were a bad idea just because it would be a great story to tell in the future.
The audiobook format is perfect for this especially because at the end of each chapter it breaks into a kind of podcast to discuss some of the stories with some of the other people involved.
I would recommend this audiobook even if you're not a fan of Dougs although I recommend you to buy and listen to his earlier book first.
