About this listen

The Dark Web is everywhere - and those who know where to look, and who to ask, can find anything. Drugs, guns, porn, ideologies, lives and deaths are all up for sale . . . and everything must go.

Set in the technological underbelly of the 21st century, this conspiracy thriller follows elite hacker Azi Bello on a journey of discovery into the dark marketplace known as Gomorrah, within which the world's worst people trade lives and influence. Taking the reader between London, Berlin, Athens and Los Angeles, as well as into terrorist-controlled Syrian cities, THIS IS GOMORRAH explores what it means to win, and to lose, at the global game of ideology and power.

A loner, charmer, idealist and connoisseur of other people's mistakes, Azi's life is spun around by a mysterious approach from a young Muslim woman called Munira, and before long his carefully crafted privacy comes crashing down. Munira is at her wits' end, a fellow hacker whose cousin has been recruited by terrorists, and who has unearthed a terrible conspiracy in her struggle to bring him home. She needs Azi's help and connections to track him down.

But can she be trusted? Can Azi trust anyone when identities can be changed with just a few clicks. . ?

Critic reviews

Chatfield pulls off a beguiling blend of riveting hacker lore, sharp dialogue and inventive action scenes
A techno-thriller with wit and style. It reminded me of Chris Brookmyre, and praise doesn't come higher than that. (Mick Herron)
Gripping, intelligent and stylish. (Sophie Hannah)
Punchy, powerful and one hell of a wild ride, this is thriller writing at its absolute best (Chris Whitaker)
A sharp thriller that takes us deep into the digital underworld. Taut and tense . . . a well told, fast-paced story packed with contemporary relevance (Adam Hamdy)
A tight, fast-moving thriller. Like Three Days of the Condor for the internet age (Mason Cross)
If espionage today is all about hack and counter-hack, which it clearly is, then Tom Chatfield has just written the classic twenty-first century spy thriller. Move over James Bond: Azi Bello has hacked your smartphone and he owns you. (Michael Ridpath)
Fast and funny, dangerous and blinding-bright . . . an adrenaline-rush of a book for our menacing times (Paul Cody)
a seething knot of spies, hackers, terrorists, tech and humans: absolutely brilliant. (Carl Miller)
Accomplished and chilling . . . Chatfield writes with real skill, intelligence, and, despite the grim story, humor
I read this from behind the sofa... I can't think of a better way to learn about hacking and the dark web . . . Halfway between a TED talk and rollercoaster! (Philippa Perry)
A rollicking good cyber thriller - one to make William Gibson proud (Madison Smartt Bell)
A swift and spiky view of modern espionage (James Swallow)
Fans of THE PRESIDENT IS MISSING won't want to miss this one (James Patterson)

This is a really entertaining thriller set in the murky world of the dark net. I liked the unlikely hero and I found myself rooting for him as he bounced his way from one bad situation to another with astonishing rapidity. Some of the technical aspects eluded my comprehension but overall it's a fascinating thriller and warrants a sequel.

I’m not usually big on fiction but this book had me hooked. The story was full of pace, drama and complexity. I loved listening to it. This is Gomorrah is exquisitely written and performed brilliantly. I hope you all enjoy it just as much as I did.
