1867. On a dark and chilling night Eliza Caine arrives in Norfolk to take up her position as governess at Gaudlin Hall. Not up to his normal standard but enjoyable.

It certainly wasn’t what I expected from this author. Not my usual type of book at all but having said that I listened till the end, somehow captured enough to find out the ending. If you like historical mysteries with a twist of romance this will be good for you.

Hard to believe it’s Boyne

Really admire a lot of Boyne’s others books, so
much so it’s difficult to believe this is written by the same person. The story is incredibly predictable and the protagonist is so slow to comprehend or even question events that the predominant feeling I had throughout was impatience. The writing was still decent in cadence and style, but the plot and character construction were truly lacking. The kind of naivety that works for a child in The Boy in the Striped Pyjamas just doesn’t work when your character is a 21 year old young woman (and having other characters point out she’s being daft isn’t enough to help). A ghost story where it’s obvious from the beginning what’s happening, so the reader is merely waiting for the protagonist to slowly put it all together, makes for a fairly tedious experience. It won’t stop me from reading more of Boyne’s books as all the others of his that I’ve read have been good, in some cases very good, but I do hope whatever happened when he was writing this doesn’t happen again.
