Summary

A victim. A mutilated body. A single word.

A young woman is found dead on the streets of London. Her throat slashed, her body mutilated, and one word carved into her flesh: “DON’T.”

Detective Superintendent Ray Paterson is assigned to the case. Young, handsome and from a wealthy background, he’s tipped for the top. He joins a team based out of Bermondsey, South London. It’s meant to be a stepping stone to his next promotion, but this case will threaten to bring down his career and everything he thought he knew about policing.

Paterson is put in charge of the dead girl's investigation and quickly discovers he must rely on his friend and mentor, Detective Sergeant Dave Jordan to guide him through.

Then another body is discovered. Another word cut into the victim’s chest.

The police realise they may have a depraved serial killer on their hands. The murderer is trying to send them a message carved in his victims’ bodies. But who’s the message really for?

How many more must die? Detective Paterson may be the only man who can stop this vile killer...if he can survive long enough.

This is the first in a series of action-packed, edge-of-your-seat crime thrillers, with an ending that will have your heart in your mouth.

Perfect for fans of Kimberley Chambers, Damien Boyd, Rachel Abbott, Patricia Gibney or Martina Cole.

Gripping and ultra-realistic

I enjoyed the printed books and I’m enjoying the audio books. Actually hearing the characters come to life is gripping; I’ve seen some reviewers who complain that the language is harsh or offensive, well I’m sorry: that’s life. That is how people speak. This is a gritty, gnarly crime thriller and that promise is delivered from Chapter 1 through the Last Words.

The narrator doesn’t do some of the characters justice at all, but maybe that’s just me.

Ray Patterson book 1

I read the kindle version of this book when it was first published and I was very excited when the audio version was released. Having voices put to these wonderful unique characters was a wonderful experience. The narrator is a really good fit.

As far as tick lists go this ticked every one of my requirements and some I didn't know I had. Ray Paterson is a rich ladies man who is fast tracking up the career ladder. His life is a car crash. They say money can't buy you happiness, well it seems to be buying Ray a whole lot of trouble and heartache. Some members of the team doubt his ability to be SIO of such a sadistic murder case which adds a new dimension to the story.

The team is made up of some very unique characters some I like and some I don't but what I do like is the way the author has developed the characters so that they grow on the reader. I particularly like Clocks behind the clown exterior lies a very perceptive detective and this comes across perfectly. Jordan is the loveable one. The team comprises a very healthy mix of different personalities that MAKE the story.

I am really looking forward to the next book.

worse narration ever!

The storyline was fine but the narration has to be the most annoying and unbelievable I've ever listened to. One in particular made me cringe every time he spoke. Can't listen to the rest of the series as he's one of the main characters.

Their Last Words

Bit slow in parts but overall good story line, wasn't over keen on the narration dialect interpretation.

fair story narration could be better

the story was a little over gory imo. i didnt really enjoy the character voices - they all sounded like uneducated thugs, esp patterson. east end or east of england voices usually are a little less broad.

loved It

Being a south london Boy, I loved the narrator, The narrator is not bad as some of the reviews make out, I loved the story, the humour, the twist and turns.

Yes, the language is colourful, but Cunt is used like shit is, in parts of SE london....

There are a few errors that i found in other books of the rhyming slang, but this book and series is absolutly brilliant.

Clocks, what an amzing charcter, Nuff said!!!!

10/10

ok

This was my 1st book in this series and I probably won't download anymore. I come from London and found the accents a bit too much and not very believable characters

Very hard to finish

Hated the narration
Didn’t like the language- over use of the word C**t! & f***y references about women, misogynistic, Actually made me cringe several times - first book I have listened to that has actually made me cringe. I will definitely not be listening to the rest of the series & have requested my credit back.

Dreadful Narration arrgghh!

If I had used a credit on this it would have been returned in at the first dialogue! However because I added narration to this Kindle Unlimited title it feels petty to return it! So I'll rant a bit instead :)

I admit I am extremely sensitive to narration but omg it's a long time since I've had a book with narration this awful.

It's not the voice, not the breathing... it's characterisation.
Once the narrator steps out of his normal voice which is fine to listen to and tries to "speak" as characters the loud booming voice, the awful accents it just goes downhill really fast into for me an irritating, frustrating experience where I couldn't decide if the story was even worth listening too. Seriously...if you can't voice act don't try.
