About this listen

“A thrilling roller-coaster of a book! Gripping from start to finish.” – Joanna Lumley, British actress, TV presenter, and travel writer

Just why hadn't anyone motorcycled from India to Burma before–and how hard could it actually be?

Against his better judgment, woefully unprepared and eager to impress his new aristocratic girlfriend, Andrew Benfield sets out to find out. The ensuing adventure takes the couple across the Himalayas and through some of the wildest parts of India, Nepal, Bhutan, and Burma. Along the way, they contend with suicidal roads, tribal head-hunters, an alarming number of men with guns, and a border that hasn't been crossed in fifty years.

The Wrong Way Round is the true story of 4,000 miles of hilarious and sometimes terrifying adventure, as the odds become increasingly stacked against them making it to their destination with themselves, their motorcycle, or their relationship in one piece.

Superbly written and humorously read travelogue of a seemingly impossible 4000 mile motorbike ride from Delhi to Yangon on a Royal Enfield Bullet. The author reads so well and the accounts of Nagaland Burma Sikim and Bhutan are informative evocative and memorable. By the end I had determined finally to buy a Royal Enfield myself.

Brilliant engaging travelogue

As a keen motorcyclist (albeit, a fairly novice one in comparison to Andrew), I was looking for a book that would encapsulate motorbikes and travelling, having just returned from 3 weeks in Vietnam and Cambodia. Admittedly, my travels included a mere 2 days exploring Angkor Wat on a motorcycle - a lot more fun than riding in drizzly England in November - but it left me dreaming of biking across the globe, and that’s when I stumbled upon this absolute gem. This book provided a raw, honest account of Andrew and his companions adventure to Burma on his Royal Enfield, filled with twists and turns from start to finish (no pun intended). Some of the bits that stood out to me the most were his love of travelling on his motorcycle, the people they met along the way, his openness about not being mechanically minded and the realities of sharing a monumental trip like this with someone you don’t always get along with. It really is a refreshingly honest and realistic portrayal of two months on the road, on a motorcycle no less - an incredible undertaking. This is an absolute must read for anyone who loves to travel, loves motorbikes or both!

Refreshingly candid portrayal of a monumental motorcycle adventure to Burma!

On paper I should have loved this book but the humour didn't land with me. For me the attitudes of the author & his companion came across as very colonial & 'jolly hockey sticks'. The journey itself is fascinating & I enjoyed hearing about the places they visited but I enjoy travel books much more when I warm to the author. If the journey had been somewhere less interesting I suspect that I'd have given up out of irritation quite early on.

Interesting Journey but ..

A very entertaining and enjoyable account of a quite hairy, mad adventure. Very witty observations, a good read/listen.

A well written and eloquently read story of the reality of travelling when all of the unknowns stand before you... Honest, funny and touching, it's a great listen and takes you to some magical places.

An honest tale of heart and travel....
