Summary

In this new novella from the number one internationally best-selling author of The Sisters and The Murder Rule, Dervla McTiernan, a mother and son fighting to prove her innocence are reunited with an estranged friend—a detective who may hold the key to her freedom—as they’re forced to put their differences aside to uncover the shocking truth behind the crime.

When Clara Coleman is taken into custody, her teenage son, Sebastien, wastes no time before calling Simon Miller: an estranged family friend and detective in their old hometown of Hartford, Connecticut. Clara’s been arrested for the murder of Rachel Stapleton, a wealthy housewife and prominent figure in Lavender Valley, their well-to-do New Jersey suburb. But she swears she did not commit the crime.

Simon knows that Clara is not capable of murder and will do anything he can to prove her innocence—he’s felt indebted to the Coleman family since her husband, Will, Simon’s best friend, passed away years before. He arrives in Lavender Valley and hits the ground running on the case. With time, details surrounding the crime as well as the Colemans’ family history are revealed, unravelling the complex web of cause and effect that will finally bring the truth to light.

Great short story

I often feel cheated when listening to short stories, but this one didn't do that. The characters were rounded and believable. The writing was very precise, and the story fliwed seamlessly. Brilliantly narrated.

Not her best

The ending of this was so very rushed and predictable - exemplifies the bad things about short stories.

Not loving the narration overall.
It's not like her other books but it was a interesting change in style

Don’t go there

It’s not that I did not like the story it wasn’t a bad plot. It’s not that I minded the supernatural on the contrary there are some good cross over stories. I didn’t even mind the narrators they were not bad considering the disjointed plot. But I don’t get it at all why the author went there. Most if they want to dabble in a different genre go there full blast not really mixing them and some can get it done very well. And in Ireland and other Celtic countries the stories are never far and quite often the supernatural is on the back of the mind of many people whatever stories are told. But this didn’t really fit not for me anyway. And still what bothered me most was that it could have been a good sidestep if it was meant to be. A lost and missed opportunity.

No disappointment here

A very different setting, a very different story, but equally compelling central characters, particularly Sebastian. My only reserve is the pace which shifts too awkwardly towards the end. I would have preferred the space of a full-length book to develop the suspicions, the atmosphere and the tension more naturally.

Disappointed

Dervla McTiernan is one of my favourite crime authors, but sadly I was not convinced by this story. I don't want to give anything away, but perhaps this was because it was too complex a plot for the novella format and so I never felt that I got to know the characters. There also seemed to be too many loose threads at the end. In comparison, I feel that 'The Roommate' was a masterclass in the short crime novella format.

Unexpected!

Usually I work out 'whodunit' quickly. Here I was so absorbed I didn't! Great listen!

Unexpected deviation from Dervla McTiernan

I have listedned to a number of books from the Cormac Reilly series and really like them. So i was intrigued to try something new and different from the author. It's a good story and the narration is engaging, I just felt I didn't quite care enough about the characters to be able to give this a full 5 stars, but close and keen to read/listen to more in the future.
