I was sad to get to the end of this book as I felt it could have gone on to tie up a few loose ends but. Nevertheless, I was left wanting more! Loved all the characters, and there was a lot of them. Great gripping thriller with lots of plots, twists and turns.

Really Gripping

...although it's my own fault. I was looking for something different to the ubiquitous "Domestic Thriller with the Woman as the Lead Character". All soft and cuddly with the only action happening at the school gates. This book isn't that.
There are a lot of characters. The first couple of hours introduces us to a LOT of characters. I had to make notes to track who is who, and the connections between characters.
For the two hours after that I still couldn't work out what the story was going to be about. Lots of words, but they didn't seem to be leading anywhere.
The story turned out to be about Alex Clayton who is the main character. He was a teenager, living in Kent in 1987, and very much wanting acceptance by the local, rather violent gang. I never managed to work out why, but maybe just to impress a girl. Cheryl Denton was the girl that Alex wanted to impress, Unfortunately something happened to Cheryl and that event is what runs through the story. Half of the action takes place 30 years later as the gang meet up again, and we gradually learn what became of them all over the years.
I struggled with this story. I couldn't get absorbed into it. It felt like listening to a very complicated news report, and I had to keep consulting my notes about who was who rather than enjoying the story. Lots of facts, but no getting inside the heads of the characters to understand them. No emotion, no empathising with the characters. Lots of jumping about that I found hard to follow.
Maybe if you like your thrillers with a good dose of violence, this may be for you. It wasn't for me. I won't be listening to any more books by Robert Kirby.
