About this listen

Compelling historical thriller, winner of the Carnegie Medal

A compelling 15th century thriller, set against the background of the Cotswold wool trade. Rich with period detail, the story of Nicholas Fetterlock's apprenticeship in his father's business and his political betrothal to the daughter of a linen merchant is nonetheless immensely accessible to twenty-first century children.

As his father embarks on a deal with Italian Lombards, Nicholas, Cecily and their friend Hal unearth a sabotage plot of smuggling and piracy that will have repurcussions all over Europe. But can they find someone to believe their tale before it is too late?

Critic reviews

“Harnett likes human beings, warts and all; she is, above all, at home with childhood, its frankness and playfulness and exuberance and vulnerability. And she sees it, like the past, as another country. In 1953, aged 12, all I knew was that it was thrilling to read a story about smuggling and skulduggery. First and foremost, Harnett knew how to tell a story. “ Kevin Crossley-Holland, ‘Books to Remember’ in The Guardian, Feb 2001

I love this story as I do all Cynthia Harnett stories for their plots and historical accuracy. I was disappointed to find that this has been abridged and some of my favourite bits have been taken out, like the gift of a girdle to Cecily.

Abridged, be careful

Love the book - so disgusted to find this is ABRIDGED after all. It's billed as Unabridged, but it is NOT.

Disappointed

Excellent story and good narration but the story is significantly abridged, contrary to the description, and loses some of the pleasure of the tale. The whole is only 2h 38m long. Shame.

Contrary to description this is abridged

I’m sorry, but this is unacceptable. The story is washed of all the little details that make it the beautifully written and well researched as well as fun loaded story this is to read in reality. Audible please make sure that you don’t confuse Abridged and non abridged as I would not have wasted a credit on it if I had known it was actually abridged. This is not a long book, please amend this to show it as being abridged and produce a proper, unabridged version as soon as possible. Very disappointed as someone who knows the unabridged version and wants her credit back again.
