About this listen

Five years ago Susannah Harper's son, Joel, went missing without trace. Bereft of her son and then of her husband, Susannah has rebuilt her life around helping others. But then, on the last night of Hull Fair, a fortune-teller makes an eerie prediction. She tells her that this Christmas Eve, Joel will finally come back to her. As her carefully constructed life begins to unravel, Susannah is forced to confront the buried truths of her family's past.

Cassandra Parkin writes beautifully and Emma Gregory’s performance is superb. I listen to 4 books a month, & have done for several years, but this is one of those that will stick in my mind. I savoured every moment, including the ending!

Loved this book!

I was hooked from the start. An intense and gripping storyline which makes you want to carry on reading into the early hours of the morning. I thought the characters were really good and brilliantly damaged. Loved it and can't wait for the next book.

Just Brilliant!

Really enjoyed this story, shows the extent a person will go to when live is involved

Well written story, it really drew me in. It’s so cold and chilling it might make you shiver. The description of psycological abuse as well as mental illness is very disturbing and made me feel a bit claustrophobic. I’ll have to listen to something cheerful now! Wonderfully narrated by Emma Gregory!

I was gripped the whole way through, couldn’t stop listening to it, the performance was great. At times really sad as it tracks the story of the marriage breakdown and difficult relationship between the family members. Really interesting story with twists and turns leading up to the final surprise ending where it all becomes clear. I’ll definitely listen to some more books by this author and/or actor.
