About this listen
Robin Jarvis's classic dark fantasy, perfect for fans of Terry Pratchett, Derek Landy and Susan Cooper's The Dark is Rising. Set in the home of Bram Stoker's Dracula.
'Deeply creepy and utterly compelling,' Guardian
When orphans Ben and Jennet arrive in the seaside town of Whitby to stay with Alice Boston, they have no idea what to expect. A lively 92-year-old, Miss Boston is unlike any other foster mother they've known.
Ben is gifted with 'the sight', which gives him the power to see things invisible to other mortals. He soon encounters the mysterious fisher folk who live under the cliffs and discovers that Alice and her friends are not quite what they seem.
But a darkness is stalking the streets of Whitby, bringing with it fear and death. Could it be a ghost from the Abbey? Or a beast from hell? Unless the truth is uncovered, the town and all its inhabitants are doomed…

This is a brilliantly written adventure that is suitable for all ages. The narration is good although the production could have done with a tweak for volume consistency at times but that is a very minor gripe. If you like ghostly adventures, mixed in with local superstition and folk lore, then this is for you. Aged 6 to 106, I'm sure you'll enjoy it.
Fingers crossed the next two books will come along soon. Then I just hope for a TV mini series!!
At last!

This story has everything - horror, mystery, magic, friendship, family, unconditional love, intrigue, characters you want to root for & all set to the wonderful backdrop of an East Yorkshire coastal town - Whitby - the home of Count Dracula himself. You can picture the story taking place up & down the lanes of this gothic fishing town which makes it even more atmospheric. Follow Alice Boston, Jennett, Ben & Nelda as they take on the forces of evil & fight to not only save Whitby but the world!
I would recommend this series to children and adults alike. I have read this to my own family and it's still one of their all time favourites too. If you also manage to get hold of the books to follow along you'll find loads of the authors own artwork illustrates and brings the story to life!
I would also recommend any other series by Robin Jarvis too - he is such a fantastic author and deserves more recognition!
My favourite book from childhood!
