Bailey (P)2021 TantorI think my lasting memory of this book will be the amount of money that the African “chattle” were brought and sold for; and, that a slave could be sold away from their wives, husbands, children, family, friends and communities upto six times during their lifetime.
The fact that the pricing of these people in the 1800s was around $1,400 per person which equates in 2026 as over £50,000 each, goes to show the colossal amount of money being made in this lucrative and abhorrent business.
It was in the year 2015 that the ancestors of the slave owners reparations ended. Over 46,000 British slave owners and their descendants, received compensation for their loss of earnings following the end of the Trans-Atlantic Slave Trade.
Whilst in America it was 2022 when it became a federal offence to lynch someone. Let’s pause and digest those facts for a minute…
No country to date has offered any compensation, sincere apology or even taken ownership of their role in this disgusting scar on humanity’s history to we, the ancestors of the slave trade.
You can’t re-write history, remove all the ugly bits and dress it up in ribbons and bows. It doesn’t matter how hard you try not to acknowledge it and brush it under the carpet… The truth will set us free ♥️
