About this listen
The world ended, and with it, so did the rules.
I was stolen from my family and raised in the wastelands to the north. I did what I had to ensure my survival. I became the Champion, with my history carved into my skin for all to see.
Now, I spend my days drinking and hiding from my past, until four newcomers offer me a job I can't refuse. When my past and future mix, I must once again rise and fight. This time it's not for my freedom, it's for my happiness.
Contains mature themes.
©2018 K. A. Knight (P)2019 TantorThe dystopia world they live in is dark and unforgiving, it reminded me of mad max and the undead. I liked the plot and the the characters, alot. We have a strong, badass fmc, and I loved every moment she kicked ass, even learning about her tragic backstory. She also gets a harem of damaged, hot men. The entire thing has way less of I call "marshmallow moments", KA Knight sometimes puts a ton of too sweet cringe worth scenes. But thos one has a nice balance of mostly dark, with plenty of spice and a sprinkle of sweetness too.
Great narration
Great dark dystopia romance

strong female lead

There's a girl with a knife and a rusty bike who saunters everywhere and repeatedly breathes deep and swallows hard. The end.
It's like when your Big Mac is served cold, without a gherkin and the lettuce is brown. You knew what you were ordering wasn't going to be great, but you feel cheated because it was unnecessarily bad.
The narrator's attempt at a Scottish accent is the most entertaining thing about this book.
Terrible

There are the barest bones of world building here, shamelessly modelled, imo, on the Mad Max films. However, there are far too many holes in this imaginary "nightmare" to make it in any way believable, especially given that we're now in an age of 3D printing which would have reduced the wastelands to subjugation within weeks if that was wanted. There are lots of more minor but similarly glaring holes in the set-up such as why the wasteland isn't teeming with children, pharmaceuticals and prophylactics being unlikely if not impossible to manufacture, according to the premise of the world we're presented with.
Personally, far from viewing Worth as a strong female lead, I found her to be pretty much irredeemably amoral, smug, self-satisfied in her reputation, blasé and generally unpleasant to have come across. Any morals she does profess to apply are so lax and woolly that they might as well not be there. Minor characters, including the 4 men who will supposedly become her harem, are poorly sketched out and fairly two-dimensional.
I found Ms Jackson's narrative style intensely irritating. She reminded me of the corporate team leader of possibly a team of telesales operatives, giving the standard Monday morning team meeting - all flat facts, aggressive exhortations and thinly veiled threats of dismissal if anyone stepped out of line or maybe even had the temerity to think they could aim for her job. Whilst she may be a competent voice actor in other cases, that wasn't evident in her reading of this pile of trash. I'll ensure I listen carefully to the preview of any other audiobook I'm interested in as her voice grated on me through every single chapter.
This was free to listen to in the Plus catalogue when I found it but I'm very glad I didn't waste a credit on it - I'd have been cross with myself if I had done. I got the very clear impression from other reviews that this ends on a cliffhanger which wasn't clear from the blurb so if you do make it through to the end, you'll have to spend another credit to find out what happens to the fetid five. I won't be looking for more of Ms Knight's work in a hurry. Give me a good old-fashioned sado-masochistic, dark mafia romance any day if the alternative is another piece of such dire and dismal drivel - at least the Irish, Italians and Russians understand how to commit acts of gratuitous violence under a code of practice which is both understandable and generally applied. In my opinion, one to avoid like the plague these characters would undoubtedly have been wiped out by.
Got through 60 percent and DNF - atrocious.
