Summary

Under a previous sun, Athas teemed with life. The sorcerer-king, after obtaining immortality for himself, united all lands under the power of his magic. But power-hungry overlords have carved the lands into pieces - setting themselves up as sorcerer-kings--and survival depends on the optimism of three steadfast people.

enjoyed this title alot, I was new to finding the Dark Sun setting but dived head first into learning all about the brutal DnD setting on YouTube. One aspect I don't think it covers deeply enough is just how brutal survival out in the deserts really is, it touches on it but not as much as I feel the setting deserves. overall a great listen.

a great find

As someone who knows very little about the Dark Sun setting (I always played Forgotten Realms), this is a great introduction. I’ve heard it described as mad max and d&d mixed, I can see that!

The best part of this audio book is the narration, Ray Porter is excellent as usual and this is mainly why i listened as long as i did.

I felt the story had some good ideas but but they were poorly filled out, almost like the writer had played a few D&D roll playing sessions then written a book about it.

The magic was glossed over, it's not what i would expect in a modern fantasy. I don't expect wave hands, point finger , say the magic word, zap!. That is rather old hat.

For me the story lacks depth, it try's to do too many things, bring people together to become a team, go on a quest, loose members, defeat an evil sorcerer king, meet strange monsters, kill them, fail, succeed after undergoing a hard test, and so on.

I was disappointed as i had read some very good reviews and heard good things about this.
